Ballot Drop Boxes Set on Fire in Oregon and Washington, FBI Launches Investigation
The FBI is investigating two separate incidents in the Portland, Oregon, area after ballot drop boxes were set on fire early Monday. In Vancouver, a small city in Washington state just across the Columbia River from Portland, hundreds of ballots were damaged when a device was placed on the exterior of a drop box and ignited. Meanwhile, an incendiary device was placed inside a ballot drop box in the southeast part of Portland, damaging three ballots. Law enforcement officials say the incidents appear connected, as they are "very similar" to an earlier failed attempt to ignite a ballot box in Vancouver on October 8. Local authorities in Portland are also working to reach out to the three voters whose ballots were damaged in the Portland incident, ensuring that they will be provided with replacement ballots. Police have released images of a vehicle they believe may be connected to the incidents—a dark-colored Volvo, which they hope will lead to further information about the suspects involved. Oregon and Washington are generally considered safe Democratic states in national elections; however, there is a close congressional race in Washington’s 3rd District, which includes Vancouver and the surrounding rural areas. This district seat is held by Democrat Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, who narrowly defeated Republican Joe Kent by less than 1% in the 2022 election. The two are set for a rematch in the upcoming election, adding tension to this district’s vote. The incidents in Oregon and Washington mirror a similar case in Phoenix, Arizona, where a man recently set fire to a U.S. post box containing around 20 ballots. According to court records, the man, who is homeless, claimed his actions were not politically motivated; he said he intended to commit a minor offense to secure shelter in jail. However, unlike the Arizona incident, which involved a general post box, the ballot drop boxes in Portland and Vancouver were solely designated for voting purposes. Washington’s Secretary of State Steven Hobbs condemned the attacks in a statement, affirming, “We take the safety of our election workers seriously and will not tolerate threats or acts of violence that seek to undermine the democratic process.” Although authorities have not yet identified those responsible, both the Portland and Vancouver police departments are actively investigating, and the FBI is pursuing leads to ensure accountability and maintain election integrity as the nation heads into the critical final days before Election Day. 19-Year-Old Shot Dead on Roadside in Phatthalung
An incident early on October 28, saw a 19-year-old man fatally shot on a roadside in Phatthalung Province, Thailand, allegedly over an unresolved personal conflict. The victim, identified as Mr. Siwakorn, was found just 150 metres from his home, having been shot multiple times in what appears to be a targeted attack. Police Lieutenant Boonrit Nuakhiao and officers from Pa Phayom Police Station, along with rescue teams, responded to the scene on Na Sai - Bo Kai Road, Moo 2, Koh Tao Subdistrict, Pa Phayom District. They discovered Mr. Siwakorn's body lying in a pool of blood, with gunshot wounds from a .38 caliber firearm to his chest, back, left arm, left side, and nape. No shell casings were found at the scene. Police also uncovered four methamphetamine pills in his pocket, which were taken as evidence for further investigation. Initial investigations revealed that an unknown individual or individuals arrived at the victim's home by motorcycle and picked him up, likely for a planned discussion over a personal matter. About 20 minutes later, nearby residents reported hearing three to four gunshots. Village headman Wisut Klaisriboon was notified and, upon arriving at the scene, confirmed the victim had been fatally shot and subsequently alerted the police. Police are currently investigating potential motives, with initial suspicions pointing toward a dispute related to illicit activities. Authorities are working to identify the suspects and bring clarity to the circumstances surrounding Mr. Siwakorn's murder. Picture from responders. -- 2024-10-29 -

Tak Bai Massacre Case Dismissed as Statute of Limitations Expires
Just imagine the suffering of those 78 people stacked like logs in the stifling heat? And the frustration of those left behind seeking justice? You can rave all you like about what a wonderful country Thailand is and how sweet and kind its people can be, but behind the façade there are some ugly elements to Thai society rivalling the worst of corruption and depravity to be found in the region. -

Monk’s Dwelling Burns Down Days After His Passing
A fire broke out at 06.30 on October 28, at the residence of a recently deceased monk at Wat Samrong, Moo 8, Saan Chao Rong Thong Subdistrict, Wiset Chai Chan District, Ang Thong. District Chief Apichat Srihera received the report and promptly arrived at the scene alongside police and local fire crews from Wiset Chai Chan Municipality, Phai Chamsin Subdistrict, and Saan Chao Rong Thong Subdistrict, dispatching a total of four fire trucks and rescue personnel from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation. Witnesses report seeing flames emerge from the door of the dwelling of Phra Wichai Puangbanyen, 47, a monk who passed away just two days prior. The fire engulfed the structure, leaving it completely in ruins. Firefighters worked for approximately 60 minutes before successfully extinguishing the flames. While no injuries or fatalities occurred, the monk’s quarters and surrounding areas suffered severe damage. Locals have speculated that the late monk’s spirit might wish to remain in the space, adding a layer of mystique to the incident. Deputy Inspector Banjob Choisiriket from Wiset Chai Chan Police Station and forensic investigators are examining the scene to determine the fire’s cause. Picture from responders. -- 2024-10-29
