Two protesters aligned with the climate activist group Just Stop Oil took aim at the US embassy in London, in a pointed response to Donald Trump’s recent election victory. Early this morning, at around 9:20 a.m., the activists sprayed orange paint across the embassy’s walls and labeled Trump a “fake populist,” drawing attention to their concerns over what they see as corporate control in politics.

A Just Stop Oil representative later issued a statement highlighting what they described as the real winner of the election. “The only real winner of today’s election is the corporate power that controls the major parties in both the US and UK. Regardless of who sits in the White House, corporations and billionaires will ensure that the interests of the fossil fuel industry will continue to be prioritized over the wellbeing of ordinary people.” The group’s position underscores its belief that wealthy interests dominate politics on both sides of the Atlantic, often to the detriment of environmental and social issues.

 

Images from the scene showed protesters identified by Just Stop Oil as Joseph Aggarwal, 25, and Jimmy, 72, conversing with police officers in front of the embassy’s stained walls. The group’s message seemed clear: as long as corporate interests remain embedded in the political system, they feel genuine democratic change will be stymied. “As long as democracy is hijacked by corporate interests and billionaires, it will fail to deliver the change ordinary people are crying out for,” the Just Stop Oil spokesperson added. “This will always leave the door open for fake populists like Trump to exploit the disaffection many feel.”

They were arrested. The question is why were they treated so gently? Spraying an unknown substance at the US embassy could easily be an act of terrorism, endangering the lives of State Department employees. Yes, State Department employees. Hmmm. Come to think of it, never mind.
