My son bought a Fino 125 two years ago and has put 65000 km on it. His GF does Grab delivery in the evenings, so it has high mileage.

After riding it for 5 minutes, it starts to splutter when applying throttle and then stops.

A small smell of burning.

I thought it was out of coolant, but apparently it doesn't use any coolant. The closest repair guy came to it and topped it up with oil, saying that was the issue.

Rode it maybe 2 or 3 km and it started losing power and spluttering again, but didn't cutout when going easy on the throttle, and the burning smell wasn't noticeable.

It seems to happen when it gets hot, after 5 minutes or so of riding.

Obviously will take it for a service, but they will just change the oil and oil filter, spark plug, brake pads and brake fluid, and pump up the tires without using a gauge.

Any ideas on what the culprit could be?

TIA.

My first thought was contaminated fuel, but the burning smell complicates things.

I'd contact the manufacturers. I had a problem with a camera that the repair guys couldn't fix, but the manufacturers came up with a solution a day after I e mailed them.

The bike is 2 years old, most people never change it.

2 years old with 65k km. That's a lot of road for a small engine.

And it does sound like fuel problem. Might be the fuel hose (burning smell might suggest that)

I suspect it ran out of oil causing damage to the piston, valves and bearings...a shade tree mechanic can "fix" it  for 3000 +++ baht

depending on the damage found when the engine is opened...

It doesn't have a fuel filter.

It's carb, not FI.

Depends on the damage/extent.

The "repair guy" topping up the oil

leads me to suspect..it has at some time run low or completely out of oil

they can actually run for quite a while with "no" oil before total destruction.
