... And how do you define a flight being or not being in the 'transit category'?

The flight is not in the transit category. It is the passenger. Passengers in transit are the passengers who use a connecting airport to get to their final destination, and are at the connecting airport for no more than 23 hours and 59 minutes.  If you look at airline fare structures, airfares will typically be more expensive for flights that have layovers that exceed this time parameter.

Examples of transit flights are the *A flights which fly to BKK and then have passengers connect to  Jakarta,  Yangon, Hanoi, KUL, SIN via TG.  The real obstacle are the airline alliances  which have airlines funnel their passengers to partner airlines. Thai International is the dominant airline at BKK and it is *A.  Unfortunately, *A is  weak in SE Asia and the *A routes are often less frequent to support connections and more expensive than the One World airline partners (e.g. Cathay -Hongkong).  Airline schedules have to be conducive to allow transit connections. PAX don't want to sit around an airport for hours waiting on a connection. SQ is set up to facilitate  connections. TG is not.

I mean seriously , who cares what an airport looks like ? You are only there for maybe 3 hours going out and an hour coming in (on a good day).

If it does the job , I'd rather have it just a concrete block and reduce all the costs in the shops by 50% and more staff clearing you through

I get it, but it can create a first impression of a place you are visiitng.  Ever been to the gulag of a an unorganized/old place like LAX?  And all the transportation issues there it is really depressing.  I was just at Incheon airport what a beautiful place and so easy to navigate.

I agree, LAX is terrible. The older airports in the USA can be dreadful. Whenever I return home to IAD, my first thought is that this place feels run-down.

Transit passenger is clear to everyone I think. AOT chief was talking about transit flights and was wondering how he defines those.
