Thailand is set to put itself on the global map by transforming its National Stadium into an international events hub. The drastic plan is geared towards revitalising the country's infrastructure to accommodate a broad spectrum of events - from international sports to music concerts. Tourism and Sports Minister, Sorawong Thienthong, made this ambitious intention clear when he revealed the immense transformation strategy.

The minister pledged his commitment to mediate between Chulalongkorn University, the stadium’s owner, and private companies to revitalise the stadium and the ageing Nimibutr Sports Building. According to Sorawong, the strategic location of the National Stadium in the heart of Bangkok, Pathumwan, presents a high-value opportunity for both public and private funding to stimulate economic development. His plan to engage private-sector management to elevate the venue to global standards comes after the expiry of the Physical Education Department’s lease.

Sorawong also underscored the inadequacy of other principal venues such as the Rajamangala Stadium, Impact Muang Thong Thani, and Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre in their existing states, underscoring the urgency in reforming the sector.

Additionally, the minister teased a few "big surprises" that might be anticipated in the world of events, sports, and entertainment. Most prominently, Thailand is ambitiously pursuing the goal to host a Formula 1 race by 2027. The minister envisions an enthralling night street race, designed to bring in tourism revenue without causing excessive public disturbance.

As part of this mammoth change, Sorawong intends to forge partnerships with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). His plan is to integrate these blockbuster events into a five-year tourism calendar, with a view to heightening Thailand's standing on the global stage. The nation is at the edge of a new era, ready to host the world in an exciting, vibrant setting.
