A tragic incident occurred on December 15, when a wild elephant from Khao Ang Rue Nai Wildlife Sanctuary crossed into a village in Prachinburi Province, fatally attacking a 45-year-old man near a sugarcane field. The ongoing issue of wild elephant encroachment has persisted for over four years, with no effective resolution from authorities.

Police Lieutenant Thirawat Yiem-on, the investigating officer from Kabin Buri Police Station, was notified of the incident in the early morning. The victim, identified as Mr. Thosaporn, 45, was found dead on the edge of a sugarcane field. His body showed severe injuries, including a fractured skull and broken limbs. Approximately 30 metres away, a black motorcycle believed to belong to the victim was found abandoned.

Witnesses reported seeing a wild elephant in the area prior to the attack. Mr. Phaedet, who was present earlier, stated that he had seen the elephant and tried to warn Mr. Thosaporn. However, by the time he returned, he discovered that the victim had already been attacked and killed. Local authorities and a volunteer wildlife monitoring team were immediately informed of the incident.

Mr. Noei, President of the Eastern Sugarcane Farmers Association, expressed his condolences to the victim’s family. He also highlighted the long-standing issue of wild elephants crossing into residential areas and farmlands, which has persisted for over four years. He criticised the lack of comprehensive action from authorities to address the problem and called on the Prime Minister to take serious measures to ensure the safety and livelihoods of villagers.

Local residents are urging the government to implement effective strategies to manage the wild elephant population and prevent further tragedies.
