Schengen visa duration between visits

So I understand about being able to stay only 90 days.

Say someone leaves after staying 90 days, how long to they need to stay out before revisiting on a multi entry Schengen visa?

90 days in every 180 day period. Idiotic rule!

The French and Spanish are trying to get this changed as they've lost out big time with the Brit Retirees since Brexit. The EU doesn't move quick, so maybe in a couple of further years.
