Jealous Gambler Attempts Murder Before Taking His Own Life

Police from the Tha Hin Police Station, Lopburi were alerted at 23.55 on December 19, to a shooting at the Happy Inn Hotel, located at 99 Moo 1, Talung Subdistrict, Mueang District, Lopburi Province. Authorities arrived at the scene to find a 30-year-old woman, Ms. Dararat Duangkamnoet, suffering from serious gunshot wounds. 

 

She had been shot five times with a 9mm handgun in the right shoulder, left leg, left arm, stomach, and left hand. She was immediately transported by volunteer rescue workers from the Poh Tek Tung Foundation to Phra Narai Maharat Hospital for emergency treatment.

 

The suspect was identified as 33-year-old Mr. Chaiyong Yaemsukhon, a former assistant village head of Moo 2, Kok Lampan Subdistrict, and the victim's ex-husband. After the shooting, Mr. Chaiyong fled the scene. Police from both Tha Hin and Mueang stations initiated an intensive manhunt, with his family members attempting to contact him and urge him to surrender. However, he ignored their calls.

 

Around 05:30 on December 19, Mr. Chaiyong's father, Mr. Manop Yaemsukhon, 58, spotted his son's white Isuzu pickup truck circling in front of their house but not entering. When Mr. Chaiyong's daughter left for school, he drove the truck into the driveway and entered the house. Mr. Manop left his son alone in a room for over 30 minutes, believing he was trying to relax. 
 

Concerned, he then contacted the police and attempted to persuade his son to come outside. After receiving no response, Mr. Manop broke open the door and discovered his son had used the same weapon from the shooting to fatally shoot himself in the head. Despite efforts by doctors, Mr. Chaiyong later died from the self-inflicted gunshot wound.

 

Family members explained that Mr. Chaiyong and Ms. Dararat had been married for years and had two daughters. Their family was well-known and financially stable, with Mr. Chaiyong having been elected as assistant village head. However, his life took a turn when he developed a severe gambling addiction, particularly to football betting. He began demanding money from his parents, siblings, and wife, leading to Ms. Dararat seeking a separation two months ago.

 

Unable to pay off his gambling debts, Mr. Chaiyong's mental state deteriorated. His father had to pay off over 100,000 baht of his debts, but it was still insufficient. In recent days, Mr. Chaiyong withdrew a handgun from pawn and carried it with him. On the night of December 18, he went searching for his ex-wife and learned she was working at the Happy Inn Hotel. 

 

Intent on reconciling, he arrived at the hotel with a gun, but when Ms. Dararat saw him approach with the weapon, she locked herself in an office. In a fit of rage, Mr. Chaiyong fired five shots through the glass door, critically injuring her.

 

The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
