I have tried to use my Master Card on items abroad but the payment never goes through .

The cards used to have Visa on them but fior some reason they replaced it with MC and Union Pay.

I was going to visit SCB tomorrow to open an account , for the simple reason I can get a Visa Debit card.

I've had a Bangkok bank VISA debit card since Oct. of 2020.

Since I learned how to do cardless withdrawals, I don't carry around my Bangkok bank ATM card.

That's my excuse for thinking it was VISA when it is in fact MasterCard.

Sorry!

There was a topic on this from 2019 on here .

My Visa finished in 2022 and I was told no more Visa on Debit cards.

Will try tomorrow and see what happens.

My mistake.. I haven't looked at my ATM card for many months... it is indeed MasterCard... sorry for the error.

So your conclusion is that the global  mastercard network doesn’t work?

Maybe apply Occam’s Razor here and realize it’s probably a setting on your account. Further, realize that an account at SCB might have the same issue.

Firstly I had to look up " Occam's Razor " as I had never heard of it .

Secondly , what setting in my account could be wrong ? I have been to Bangkok bank and explained the situation and they said there was nothing wrong with my card , or it's ability to purchase anything .

So I am not saying the global Mastercard doesn't work , I am saying that it doesn't give me what I need like Visa does.

My experience used to be that all MC/VISA and electronic banking functions worked great internationally.

But it isn't always true.

This last year I had several weeks where I had to use bank transfers to pay online transactions because my card wasn't honored online.  Also, when I was supposed to be sent an OTP code I wouldn't receive a code so the transaction could not be completed.

For one bank, when logging on to the website OTP by SMS didn't work, OTP by voice call did.

These are accounts opened in the US and the phone is on a US phone provider network.

I called and SMSed the US phone from my Thai phone and it worked fine.

The last week everything seems to be working great again.

So my question is, which principle overrules the other?

Occam's razor or Murphy's Law?

You could have your “total limit for online spending” set to 0. There’s a menu in the BBL app as shown in the attached photo.

You could also be entering the card information wrong. I think if there is no name on the card there shouldn’t be a name entered, or if it says “Valued member” or whatever, that is what you enter not your real name.

Thanks for the info. I checked the daily limit and it was much to high , so I have lowered to be on the safe side.

So that wasn't the problem , going back to the name , there is no name or anything on the front of the card. Just card number , bank code and expiry date........

I always put my name as I assumed it was attached to that card number.....

There is a randomness implied about “Murphy’s Law,” but the financial system isn’t random. The reasons for things may not be clear, but that is different from being random. In this context, Murphy’s Law is more a statement of ignorance. Which satisfies Occam’s Razor.

The short version: The simplest explanation is that you don’t understand what’s going on and you call that “Murphy’s Law.”

Murphy's law is not about randomness.

It refers to the impossibility of foreseeing every problem that might arise in complex systems designed by humans.

When problems or events not anticipated by designers arise or occur "things go wrong".

As far as not understanding what is going on, I understand perfectly.

The system is not working as intended, that is what is going on.

Access authorizations are not working consistently.

The responsibility for knowing where that failure lies is not mine.

As far the electronic financial/commerical system, everything works perfectly until it doesn't.

My problems have all been with authorization of charges or access and from a failsafe point of view all the errors have  resulted in denial of appropriate access which is a preferable outcome to allowing inappropriate access.

Even still, access authorizations are not working consistently.

I have no use for a Thai credit card as I am pleased with the benefits from my U.S. Visa card associated with my JPMorgan Chase banking relationship and United Airlines mileage plus program.

But I recently switched from Bangkok Bank's 'Union Pay' ATM Debit card to their Mastercard ATM Debit card because Google would not accept my U.S. Visa card any longer (pricing differences in different countries).  Works for that monthly transaction as well as at the ATM machine.

We will see if Microsoft accepts my U.S. Visa card for OneDrive in February.
