Contempt Hearing Looms for Rudy Giuliani Amid $148M Defamation Case

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani faces an uphill battle as a federal judge signaled that an upcoming contempt hearing might not bode well for him. The case stems from a $148 million defamation award granted to two Georgia election workers, whom Giuliani falsely accused of ballot tampering during the 2020 presidential election. The hearing, scheduled for next Friday, could have significant financial and legal consequences for Giuliani.

Judge Lewis J. Liman of Manhattan issued an order on Friday expressing frustration with Giuliani’s apparent lack of compliance in providing information about his assets. Liman dismissed what he described as attempts by Giuliani and his lawyer to sidestep requests from the election workers' attorneys. The judge made it clear that Giuliani and his legal team must come prepared to justify why Liman should not grant adverse inferences based on evidence in the case. Such a decision could jeopardize Giuliani’s Palm Beach, Florida, condominium, which he has claimed as his personal residence and shielded from the defamation judgment.

The case also includes a January 16 trial to determine the fate of Giuliani’s Florida home and other possessions, such as World Series rings. The election workers’ lawyers filed the contempt request after accusing Giuliani of failing to produce several assets, including a Manhattan apartment lease, a Mercedes, luxury watches, jewelry, and sports memorabilia like a signed Joe DiMaggio shirt. These items were ordered to be turned over in October.

Despite these legal setbacks, Giuliani’s lawyers remain optimistic, predicting they will eventually reclaim custody of the items through appeals. However, the contempt hearing follows a contentious November court appearance in which Giuliani expressed anger at Judge Liman, accusing him of unfair treatment.

Giuliani, a former federal prosecutor and one-time personal attorney for Donald Trump, was found liable last year for defaming the Georgia election workers. He falsely alleged that the workers smuggled in fraudulent ballots in suitcases, counted ballots multiple times, and tampered with voting machines. The baseless claims subjected the election workers to death threats and harassment, profoundly impacting their lives.

In his order, Judge Liman emphasized the seriousness of Giuliani’s defiance. The possibility of losing significant assets looms large as the contempt hearing approaches, signaling further consequences in the long-running legal battle. A request for comment from Giuliani’s lawyer went unanswered, adding another layer of uncertainty to an already fraught situation.

maybe a Joe style Presidential pardon looming for Jiuliani come mid January.

It's absolute clown, and this street goomba needs to be locked up for a very very long time. He is utterly toxic, and is very deserving of his current fate.

I'd like to see another can of "Just For Men"    drip down his face.     That was hilarious..

For a civil case that does not have "guilty" or "not guilty" outcomes?   Really?

Locked up?  For what has he been criminally convicted, or even indicted?

Not possible. Appeals court is the only route, a chance to have the damages award reduced.

Throw him in jail and let him make license plates to earn some money towards the money he owes to his victims.

He's just one of the gang about to take power in the beacon on the hill ...

No doubt he is rotten but a $148 million judgement is absurd.

@spidermike007made no claim of criminal charge or conviction.  You've exaggerated his statement.

Contempt of court can be elevated to a criminal charge and can lead to incarceration.  Giuliani is definitely aware of the potential punishment but is adamantly resisting the judge's orders.

No, I did not, he clearly stated that he should be locked up, something that cannot happen in his civil case.   There is currently no contempt charge.

The first clause of Article II Section 2 of the Constitution provides: “The President … shall have Power to grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offences against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment.”

Rudy's  misdeeds are primarily state law violations. He has pulled every legal trick that he could including a bogus bankruptcy filing that was dismissed. The  court has had enough of him and his  games. Trump cannot protect him. The  reality is that he was caught in his lies, lies which put  2 peoples' lives at risk and who sustained  lengthy harassment and threats of violence because of Rudy. Now that he is held responsible, he doesn't want to accept responsibility for his malicious and nasty acts. Let him lose his condo. The man squirreled  money away and won't go hungry.  If anyone is feeling sorry for him, buy his T shirt or his coffee.

Personally I think when someone in that position abuses their powers the way he did to virtually ruin innocent people's lives and livelihoods then 148k is quite reasonable. He effectively bankrupted and cast into chaos the lives of his victims. Why should the same not happen to him? A lawyer of all people.

He's a disgrace, but as I said above only one of the bunch being gifted power over the US in a few days.

Enjoy.

Trump will sort this out and the Dems won't have a leg to stand on after Bidens actions.

Judges can order imprisonment for contempt of court.
