A worker involved in an underground electric cable installation project was critically injured after falling 10 metres into a large construction shaft, in Nonthaburi Province during the early hours of the morning of January 11.

At approximately 04:30, officers from Muang Nonthaburi Police Station received a report of the incident, which occurred at the construction site near Soi Tiwanon 10, Tiwanon Road, Talat Khwan Subdistrict, Mueang District. Rescue teams from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation were dispatched to the scene to assist with the emergency.

The site, part of an ongoing underground power line installation project, had exposed shafts, with concrete slabs removed to allow workers to access the shaft. According to reports, the incident occurred as the team was preparing to wrap up their work, which had been underway from 22.00 the previous evening until 05.00.

The injured worker, identified as Mr. Lae, 30, a Cambodian national, was found at the bottom of the 10-metre-deep shaft. He reportedly sustained injuries from the impact with the shaft floor. Fellow workers had descended to check on his condition while awaiting assistance.

Rescue personnel, assisted by construction workers, utilised a crane and a  rescue basket stretcher, to extract the injured man. The rescue operation lasted approximately 30 minutes. First aid was administered at the scene before the worker was transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

A co-worker revealed that the incident occurred as Mr. Lae accidentally stepped back and fell into the shaft while helping to lift a concrete slab into place to restore the road surface. The incident is under investigation.

There are a number of reasons why this incident could have happened. The article suggests that he was working without proper fall arrest equipment at height (at the edge of the shaft).

The time take to effect extraction of the casualty and the fact a crane had to be used probably means the rescue equipment wasn't in situ, thus a rescue plan was not in place.

Really basic stuff that could have easily prevented this happening.
