Chinese Tourist Dies in Jet Ski Collision on Patong Beach

A 33-year-old Chinese tourist lost his life after a jet ski collision in Patong Bay earlier afternoon on January 14.The incident occurred at approximately 14:30 near the dolphin park area of Patong Beach, Kathu District. Pol. Capt. Thapapon Paengphimlo, an investigator from Patong Police Station, received a report from a local jet ski rental operator about the incident.

 

Lifeguards stationed at Patong Beach quickly rescued the injured man from the sea and brought him ashore. Emergency medical responders from Patong Municipality and the Kusoldharm Foundation attempted to revive him at the scene before transferring him to Patong Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

 

The deceased was identified as Mr. Liu Hong Chao, 33, a Chinese national. The collision occurred roughly 200 metres from the shore in Patong Bay. According to the investigation, Mr. Liu’s jet ski collided with another jet ski operated by his friend, Mr. Lyu Zhifeng, 28, also a Chinese national.

 

Lifeguards interviewed Mr. Lyu, who confirmed the collision, which left Mr. Liu critically injured. Officers inspected both jet skis involved in the accident, documenting visible damage as evidence.

 

Pol. Col. Chaloemchai Hoernsawat, Chief of Patong Police Station, and Pol. Lt. Wichet Suwannano, Deputy Inspector, inspected the scene alongside medical examiners from Patong Hospital. A detailed examination of the crash site and the jet skis is underway to determine the circumstances leading to the accident.

 

 

Chalermpong Saengdee, Member of Parliament for Phuket’s District 2, who was in the area to review safety, expressed his condolences over the incident and emphasised the urgent need for stricter safety measures for water sports activities. He stressed the importance of increasing oversight and regulation by local authorities, including the Phuket Marine Office, the Marine Police, the local police, and tourism operators offering water-related activities.

 

Mr Saengdee called for thorough briefings to be given to tourists renting jet skis, particularly highlighting the dangers and safety protocols of operating such equipment in public waters. He pointed out that incidents like this one, where a tourist was killed in a jet ski collision, highlight the need for better communication between service providers and tourists.

 

In addition, Mr Saengdee referred to another recent tragic event on 5 January, when a parasailing instructor fell to his death at Karon Beach. He further suggested that water sports operators must provide tourists with comprehensive information and ensure they understand safety precautions before participating in activities.

 

He emphasised the importance of wearing life jackets and having insurance, as well as essential safety measures, particularly for tourists engaging in water activities. This would help cover any unexpected accidents or mishaps, offering a layer of protection for those using water sports equipment.

 

The MP also expressed concern over the growing number of water-related incidents in the region, which could impact Phuket’s tourism industry. He mentioned a recent incident where a boat capsized near Racha Island, causing panic among 38 tourists and crew members.

 

Mr Saengdee called on the relevant authorities, including the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, to clarify the safety measures in place and ensure that Phuket is ready to safeguard the wellbeing of tourists while maintaining its reputation as a premier tourist destination in Thailand.

But of course the jet ski operator had full insurance for every person who rents their jet ski , so a hefty payout and all damages are completely covered….. oh sorry I was dreaming, TIT…

not licensed, no insurance, 300,000 bht damage to both  10 year old Jetskis is more likely the outcome… will be patched up and out for rent within a week!
