Nestled along Thailand’s stunning Andaman Coast, Krabi and Phuket rank among the country's most beloved travel hotspots. If you're contemplating a trip to these idyllic locations and seeking inspiration for day excursions, you're in the right place! We'll also highlight some activities for those based in Khao Lak, situated just north of Phuket. Here’s a selection of remarkable day trips you can enjoy while exploring the Andaman Coast!

1) Hong Islands

Beautiful mountains in Ratchaprapha Dam at Khao Sok National Park, Surat Thani Province, Thailand.

The Hong Islands are a true gem of the Andaman region. The word "hong" translates to "room" in Thai, and a visit to the principal island reveals a concealed bay that gradually comes into view as you glide in by boat. On the opposite side of Hong Island lies a lush nature trail and a viewpoint that offers breathtaking vistas of the surrounding beaches and islands. Day tours departing from Krabi or Phuket typically feature additional stops at nearby islands, such as Ko Lao Lading.

2) Phang Nga Bay

Long boat and blue water at Maya bay in Phi Phi Island, Krabi Thailand.

No trip to this region is complete without experiencing the enchanting Phang Nga Bay. Famous for its striking limestone karsts, this area was made iconic by the 1970s film, *The Man with the Golden Gun*. The landmark island of Ko Khao Ping Gan, known as 'James Bond Island,' boasts the memorable needle-shaped rock of Khao Tapu rising dramatically from the sea. Sightseeing tours operate regularly from Phuket, Krabi, and Khao Lak, including a visit to the floating village of Ko Panyee, which has a rich history dating back to the late 18th century. While tourism supports the economy here, fishing remains the community's primary livelihood.

3) Samet Nangshe Viewpoint

Beautiful Samet Nangshe viewpoint over Phnagnga Bay scenic with mangrove forest and mountains in Andaman sea near Phuket Thailand

For a breathtaking perspective of Phang Nga Bay, consider a trip to the Samet Nangshe viewpoint on the mainland. While a day visit offers stunning views, staying overnight allows you to bask in both the unforgettable sunrise and sunset experiences.

4) Kayaking in Ao Thalane or Phang Nga

If you find yourself in Krabi, take the opportunity to paddle your way through the enchanting waters of Ao Thalane. After a thorough safety briefing and training, you'll navigate through peaceful lagoons, mangrove forests, and hidden caves, all while exploring the lovely Tham Bok Korani National Park. This eco-friendly adventure keeps you close to nature and increases your chances of spotting wildlife you might otherwise overlook from a larger boat.

5) Experiencing Local Life on Ko Klang

While in Krabi, immerse yourself in the local culture through community-based tourism on the island of Ko Klang. Just a short boat ride from Krabi Town, you can connect with villagers who provide insight into their cherished customs and traditions. If you prefer exploring independently, you can navigate the island and arrange activities upon arrival, or book a guided experience with responsible tour companies like Local Alike, Andaman Discoveries, or Krabi Eco Cycle.

6) Cultural Encounters at Laem Sak

Traveling is a fantastic way to experience diverse cultures, and Thailand places a growing emphasis on community-based tourism. In Krabi province, one such community is Laem Sak, which was recognized at the Responsible Thailand Awards 2022 for their dedication to sustainable tourism practices.

7) Similan Islands

The spectacular Similan Islands, located off the coast of Khao Lak, are part of the protected Mu Ko Similan National Park. Certain islands are accessible for day trips from Khao Lak or Phuket, though some remain untouched to ensure the preservation of marine life. Ko Similan, the largest island, is particularly celebrated for its exceptional snorkelling and diving opportunities.

😎 The Surin Islands

Just like the Similan Islands, the Surin Islands are another fabulous destination for diving and snorkelling adventures. As part of a national park, the area thrives with marine biodiversity. Unlike the Similan Islands, Ko Surin Tai is inhabited and home to the Moken community, known for their deep connection to the sea and their long-standing presence in this region before it became a national park.

9) Ko Yao Noi

The twin islands of Ko Yao Noi and Ko Yao Yai present a serene getaway worth spending a few days exploring. However, if time is limited, you can enjoy a delightful day trip from Phuket to Ko Yao Noi, where the tranquil beauty of the islands offers instant relaxation.

10) Little Amazon, Takua Pa

A visit to the charming Takua Pa Old Town can be combined with an adventure to the 'Little Amazon.' This peaceful area of waterways and mangroves may not rival the grand Amazon rainforest, but it's a delightful spot for exploration. Here, you can observe a fascinating range of wildlife, from colorful birds to playful monkeys, in the trees above.

With so many incredible options for day trips, the Andaman Coast promises unforgettable experiences filled with beauty, culture, and adventure. Whether you're kayaking through serene lagoons or indulging in local traditions, your journey through these popular Thai destinations will undoubtedly be memorable!

The first picture, with the Hong Island description, is actually from Khao Sok (Cheow Lan) Lake / Rachapraba Dam, Phang Nga.

Still, a great spot at about 90 minutes from Krabi Town/Ao Nang.

I spent 8 days in Oa Nang last July. I almost went on one of these tours until I saw people coming back beet red. Your getting sun from above and reflection off the water as well. The boats have canvas roofs but you spend time in the water too.  If I ever go back I will be better prepared and would definitely take a tour.
