Though Mulino told Rubio that Panama’s sovereignty over the canal was not up for debate, he also said he had addressed Washington’s concerns over Beijing’s purported influence around the waterway.

Panama would not renew a 2017 memorandum of understanding to join China’s overseas development initiative, known as the Belt and Road initiative, Mulino said, also suggesting that the deal with Beijing could end early.

As CNN has previously reported, Hutchison does not control access to the Panama Canal. Workers at their two ports only load and unload containers onto ships and supply them with fuel. Three other ports in the vicinity of the canal are operated by competing companies providing similar services.

Expecting some grovelling apologies soon from the over emotional cabal that likened Trump's negotiating with Panama as end of the world we know stuff. It wasn't. It was brilliant negotiation in the time honored carrot and stick routine.

Lesson = Trump is always right, the frothers are always wrong. Just trust the guy and chill out.

Oh my... The word is just getting out now about USAID, and its MASSIVE corruption and illicit funding operations for many, many years. Payoffs to dems and rinos and others, via  grants to NGOs/501c outfits. Funding dirty ops all over the world, some of them coming back to haunt on U.S. soil.

It's all exploding. The rats are scurrying. What's the phrase? 'You can't stop what's coming'.

Panama refuses to grant USA free access to the canal

The Panamanian government on Wednesday slapped down claims being made by the Trump administration that it had agreed to grant free passage for United States military ships through the Panama Canal.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Panama is denying the State Department's claim that American ships would have access to the canal "without charge fees, saving the U.S. government millions of dollars a year."

The issue, according to the Journal, is that giving American military ships a free pass through the canal would likely violate treaty commitments that the government made in the past.

''Panama still needs to find a way to allow free passage without breaching a neutrality clause banning preferential treatment for any country, people familiar with the discussions said," reports the Journal. "The canal’s administrator, Ricaurte Vásquez Morales, told The Wall Street Journal last month that breaching the neutrality treaty would lead to chaos."

The problem is that Trump will rack up a dozen victories in a row, then he'll stumble on Gaza (that's been intractable for 80+ years) and that's all they'll want to talk about.

The USA has no legal basis to take over the canal. Long before the US could gain control of the canal, it might very well be destroyed. I don't think the US population has the stomach to take the casualties that would occur if the USA occupied Panama. More importantly,  invading Panama  would require a declaration of war and it is unlikely Congress would authorize it. The USA risks  a  guerrilla war in Latin America. No US citizen would be safe.

Panama's President tells US to "stop  lies and falsehoods"

Mulino said he asked his ambassador in Washington to take “firm steps” to reject the claims made by the Trump administration.

We built it. Panama would last an hour and we dont need a declaration of war.

Panama exists as a nation because of us. No more Mr. Nice Guy.

Yet another meaningless piece of drivel based on assumptions!

For someone who once claimed to be more intelligent than most AN members and excellent at grammar I suggest you were talking about the wrong person.  Place names start with capital letters!
