Outdated 2-5pm Alcohol Ban Faces Renewed Criticism in Thailand

The UK had the same afternoon ban for decades but finally did away with it in the 1990s. I recall the reason the afternoon ban was introduiced in the UK (unless a myth), was to get the war-time workers back on the assembly lines after lunch. Industrialists and employers probably pushed to keep the afternoon ban for decades thereafter.

Thank goodness you are not a Mason...................

Yes, I was never good at shaking hands.

Wasn't it the case that you could buy alcohol in supermarkets at such times provided you purchased more than 10 litres. I got told that in Villa Market once.

Nothing has changed since 1972...

Except the birth rate was 7 offspring per woman in those days. Imagine! Wonder how many fathers??!

Out in Isaan, they would just give birth in the garden without any medical supervision.

No electricity, no plumbing; crapping in the forest until 1990, according to my EX.

That was the case in Villa Market next to Sukhumvit 33/1 - they never prevent bulk buying (i.e. if getting a box of wine (12 bottles etc)...

But... Its a PITA elsewhere...  I collected my son from school the other day, had to rush to the Villa Market before 2pm...  Got there just on 1:58pm...

... Picked up an empty box (showing the booze item) and took it to the check-out.

Then the check-out girl got a member of staff to get the actual bottle from the storage.

The 'fat' member of staff came out with a plate of food in hand, and with food in mouth attempted to say it was too late, its now after 2pm (but it came out a slobby messy mouthful cos she was still stuffing her face while trying to speak).

I was ready to get involved, but the staff member told her I was there before 2pm and the other girl wasn't around to help out...

... So they sold me booze at about 2:05pm...  a small win !!!... But it made me realise how ridiculous the rule is.

Its always been ridiculous - one of those 'no logic whatsoever' rules that often has an impact on convenience.
