Marriage and stay Thailand

Featured Replies

I know I am hijacking this posting, but I need some quick advice and have no idea where to post...

I am getting married in 3 weeks time and while I know I have to do a few things regarding telling the british embassy or something, I haven't got a clue....

Can anyone talk me thru the process in dumb english so that I don't cock this up..

I am english, my wife (to be) is Thai.. we will be staying here for the foreseeable future (apart from the odd holiday in blighty (is holiday the right word!)...

I just want to make this legal..

Thanks...

oh and please feel free to berate me / move the posting for hijacking....

1. You must obtain a paper from the Embassy that you sign and they notarize saying you are free to marry and giving general data. Believe it cost several thousand baht but you will find full details on the UK Embassy Bangkok website.

2. That then must be translated into Thai and registered (legalized) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Normally a two day process that translation company can take care of for a few thousand more.

3. You then visit a district office with paper/passport and both sign paperwork of marriage. Two witness will be required and they may want you have have someone that can speak both English and Thai to make sure you understand what you are signing (which will be in Thai).

4. Once married you can obtain a 60 day extension of stay one time to give you time to figure out your next step if you don't have that planned yet.

Yes you have to get an afirmation for freedom to marry go to the Bangkok Consular Section and they will do for you normaly two days.

If like me you dont like staying to long in Bangkok can be expensive I would suggest going to the solicitors office near the embassy.

Location Turn right out of the embassy cross the road them go over the pedestrian bridge walk straigt up the road there is a good solictor on the left. Walk in show your documents and explain you want to get maried quickly I think they charege 2500 Baht that includes certifiing all paperwork They will take you to an amphur office you sign the paper and that is it.

Please check the documentation requirments as if my memory servse me right you must have your birth certificate.

Added precautions go to your fiances local amphur and check she is not married outherwise the whole process is scewd. If you were maried before make sure you have divorce paperwork.

Check the bankok office website because everything in Thailand changes.

Getting a Thai visa for your new wife is not Easy if you are not Domicile in The UK.

I can help you

Bye For Now Tom
