Over 65 foreigner (me) still working - Can I claim additional personal tax allowance?

Featured Replies

As header - My employer is saying the additional allowance is for Thais only 😞

Any and all information is welcomed.

Are you talking about the 190000 baht for being over 65?

There is one tax code.  It applies equally to all tax residents, regardless of nationality.

Yup.

IMHO you can.

Look at "Income Exemption Entitlement Attachment" form for PND90 return.. It mentions Foreigners as being eligible. Sorry about the size of the image. Use your browser's zoom control to blow it up.

PND91 (english version) does not mention foreigners, just taxpayers, and as @TheAppletons has already stated, that includes you.

I was 65 in April 2024, is the allowance pro-rata or only for full years?

Office lady is checking with the accountant.

If you are 65+ on the day of filing you can claim.

More, that you need to turn 65 DURING the Tax Year (ie.  during 2024 - not in the 1st 3 mths of 2025)

That makes sense, I was 65 in April 2024 so it should apply.

Still waiting for the company accountant to get back to me.

Keep us informed of what they say. My birthday is in April as well and it would be nice to get the extra allowance for the year I turn 65 as well.

You will be *astonished* to know that not all accountants are up to speed on every paragraph in the tax regulations in Thailand.

I had read them* ( yes, saddo, I know, but it's my money..) to see what allowances and deductions were possible. When I met my accountant, he was unaware of several of them**, but after checking agreed that they were legitimate.

* In translation - you can find them on the internet

** This was not a surprise. It was the same with my UK accountant. At least the Thai accountant is cheap.

Do they do your taxes?

One of the things I miss about working. They did both my US and Thai taxes.

I turned 65 in November and the tax office worker gave me the 190,000 without any questions.

Yup, they also do an approximate monthly deduction from my $$$ (a bit like UKs PAYE) I just cough up any balance owed 😞

ALLOWANCES AND DEDUCTIONS.png

  • 3 months later...

The wife fills in our individual tax returns every year; she always seems to leave it to the very last day which does my head in.  She said when doing my tax return this year, there was a box to tick or a pop up which she clicked to claim the allowance for me being over 65. I got a very nice cheque this morning from the tax department, which far exceeded any tax rebate I've ever received here before.
