In a dramatic turn of events, the former President of the Philippines, Rodrigo Duterte, has been arrested following a request from the International Criminal Court (ICC). The authorities apprehended Duterte on Tuesday as he disembarked at Manila airport, having just arrived from Hong Kong.

The Philippines government confirmed the arrest amidst ongoing international scrutiny regarding Duterte's controversial anti-narcotics campaign.

The arrest stems from allegations of "crimes against humanity" attributed to Duterte's aggressive stance on drug-related offenses during his presidency, spanning from 2016 to 2022. This initiative, widely termed as the "war on drugs," allegedly bypassed the legal system, depriving suspects of their rights to due process. The crackdown is reported to have resulted in thousands of casualties, including minors, casting a long shadow over Duterte's tenure.

In recent statements, Duterte remained unapologetic about his methods, asserting that his actions were driven by the best interests of the Filipino people. He expressed his resignation to the possibility of arrest, stating his willingness to face the consequences if they arose, suggesting a readiness to accept his fate, including potential incarceration.

Duterte’s arrest marks a significant escalation in the ICC’s efforts to hold former world leaders accountable for human rights violations. This move could potentially set a precedent for similar cases in the future.

hardly instant.

How long was he waging his war, and how long has he been out of office?

It has taken years to bring him to task, and it remains to be seen if this arrest is all just for show

He could hang himself in a jail cell.   🤔

Release him. How dare the Phillipines give up their sovereignty to some Socialist apparatchiks.

I've been told that the Philippines has seen an uptick in drug-related crime since Duterte quit, and that his successor might be profiting from this.   Also, Sara Duterte has fallen out with Marcos so this might be as much about politics than anything tangible.

Someone being arrested for a crime, but actually it's political motivated.  Can't believe it!  Would never happen anywhere else?

If you netted it all out, I wonder if more Filipinos died, or more were saved by his policies?

Never mind that I suspect it was the bad guys dying.

Well, most of the international community ... or maybe some of them. Apparently the US is sanctioning the ICC because it dares to investigate Netanyahu.

I believe the US is not even signed up to the ICC.

I hope the loudmouth has to spend the rest of his life behind bars. That guy was nothing, but a massive embarrassment for the Philippines.

I hope they also go after Thaksin for his thinning of the opposition war on drugs.

Probably mostly bad guys, but with quite a few  mostly goodish guys just trying to make a "buck" to feed their families..  legalise the drugs and then the govmnt won't have the mandate to kill "innocent civilians"  unfortunately they will just find another excuse as always.

This guy adopted Thaksin's war on drugs approach. He gets arrested for extrajudicial killings and Thaksin's de facto running ruining a country.

Wasn't highlighting 'their' selectivity.

You were the one, out of 193 member states of the UN, to specify only 1 ... 'USA'

Yea, spewing a bit of hate there ... I think :coffee1:

The war on drugs.

He went through great pains to prevent drugs.

Killing and persecuting many!

War brings about harsh realities!

No, they have nukes.

He actually Cleaned Up own country.

During his reign, public safety is said to be greatly improved.

He then became enormously popular among the ordinary people.

US, Israel, Russia (among others) have not signed up to ICC. Basically the biggest war criminals don't recognize international law (only when it suits them, the cowards!)

You think wrong, I hate USA equally to UK, France and any other wearern country that push for wars

Thaksin should probably start thinking about going back into self-exile again in a non-extradition country, and quickly!

Except for those started by Russia!
