In a bid to support the government's Thailand Zero Dropout policy, officials in Phuket have intensified efforts to reintegrate school dropouts into the educational system. During a meeting on March 10, led by Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat, it was revealed that 14,282 children have dropped out across various categories in the province. The session focused on crafting strategies to ensure these children access education or vocational training, equipping them with essential future skills.

The discussions highlighted that 642 of these children require immediate intervention due to various challenges like disabilities, behavioural issues, chronic illnesses, economic hardships, or involvement in household or child labour.

This initiative is part of a nationwide campaign launched to reform Thai education, making it inclusive and accessible following a Cabinet-approved policy dated May 28 of the previous year. The policy aims at reducing school dropout rates across the country, ensuring that every child receives a fair chance to learn and grow.

To tackle the dropout issue effectively, Governor Sophon formed a dedicated committee on January 20 to keep track of the situation, formulate intervention plans, and encourage income-generating activities for students alongside their education.

In support of these efforts, officials will engage directly with affected communities in Phuket by the end of April to provide necessary aid to children and families. A subsequent meeting is planned for early May at the Phuket Provincial Education Area Office to assess progress and map out further steps, reported The Thaiger.

Until the Thai curriculum is changed, most kids will not have the relevant skills for anything other than manual jobs.

Teach children to think and to question, not just to follow orders.
