Hungary Moves to Restrict LGBTQ Rights and Dual Citizenship in Proposed Constitutional Amendments

Hungary’s ruling party has introduced a set of constitutional amendments that could lead to a ban on the country’s annual LGBTQ Pride March and allow the expulsion of dual citizens deemed to be a threat to national sovereignty. The proposals, submitted by the governing Fidesz party, align with Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s longstanding nationalist policies and his increasing hostility toward LGBTQ rights and independent media.

 

 

Orban, who has been in power since 2010, has made repeated attacks on LGBTQ people and recently vowed to curb foreign funding for independent media and nongovernmental organizations. His remarks followed a decision by U.S. President Donald Trump to pause funding from the U.S. Agency for International Development, a move that sparked speculation that Orban would feel emboldened to take further steps against press outlets critical of his administration.

 

“The corruption network that rules the entire Western world of politics and media must be eliminated,” Orban declared in parliament on February 24. He added that his government was prepared to “go to the wall” in order to enact these new laws.

 

One of the proposed constitutional amendments places an emphasis on the protection of children’s physical, mental, and moral development above all other rights. This provision could serve as the basis for banning Pride Marches, as the government could argue that such events are harmful to children. The timing of the amendment suggests that the administration is specifically targeting the LGBTQ community ahead of the 2026 elections.

 

Another controversial change concerns dual citizens, allowing the government to expel Hungarian nationals who also hold another citizenship if they are considered a threat to the country’s national sovereignty, public order, territorial integrity, or security. This measure could have serious implications for thousands of Hungarians with dual nationality.

 

The amendments would also formally define in the constitution that Hungary recognizes only two sexes, male and female, a stance that mirrors the views expressed by Trump. Additionally, the new proposals seek to enshrine the right to cash payments, a policy favored by the Hungarian far-right due to widespread distrust in banking institutions.

 

With the Hungarian economy only beginning to recover from an inflation crisis and a strong opposition party emerging as a significant challenge to Orban’s rule, the proposed constitutional changes appear to be part of his broader strategy to solidify control before the next election. As tensions rise, the amendments signal a deepening of Hungary’s conservative shift under Orban’s leadership.

In order to apply for membership of the EU a country has to respect a set of  common values such as human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law and respect for human rights. This obligation does not cease once membership is granted and It is becoming increasingly apparent that Hungary is failing on a number of these counts.

Hungary receives  direct payment benefit of 4.5 billion Euros from the EU. It  is also given other funding under various cohesion projects that currently exceeds 10 billion Euro.  Hungary  is a net beneficiary  of the EU. Hungarians  go to work in the EU, while no one in the EU goes to work in Hungary. Hungary benefits from preferred trade  access to the EU.  Having all that comes with an obligation to respect the  EU rules and regulations.

 

The EU has some basic civil rights requirements. Principles such as no discrimination, no  state sanctioned violence against  vulnerable marginalized people, anti corruption requirements,  and requirements for judicial and police integrity.  Hungary has difficulty in implrementing anti corruption measures and in addressing  state sanctioned suppression of democratic institutions and a free press.

 

It's real easy. Orban and his fascist supporters can withdraw from the EU and  go F themselves or they can respect the. basic tenets of membership in the EU. Germany, France, Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Austria and Italy are  carrying the EU with their contributions.  At the very least, Hungary should respect their reasonable  expectations of  decency and civility.

I'm against any attack on LGBTQ+ people, but I agree with the proposed ban on dual citizenship.

If you mean why doesn't the EU expel Hungary? Then the answer is that it can't: There is no mechanism to do so.

Gey Pride parades don't happen on the internet Chomps. And unfortunately, you don't need to go looking for it on the internet either. The MSM have it front and centre, and the social media commentators also cover it, mostly to mock it.

If Orban feels that his views are so inconsistent with those of the other Member States that a working relationship is impossible, he is perfectly entitled to enact whatever necessary measures are needed to enable Hungary to leave the EU.

 

He won't, of course, because he knows that will be the end of his political career. Firstly, the majority of the Hungarian population favour membership (59% vs. 39%; Source: Pew Research Centre) and secondly, because withdrawal would be an economic catastrophe for Hungary.

 

An alternative would be for Orban to resign but that is not going to happen either. So the EU are left with having accommodate a pro-Russian sympathiser bent on causing disruption, who does not share any of the fundamental values of the organisation.
