I would prefer if kangaroos were not culled, but there is a legitimate reason for it. The roos  destroy sensitive ecosystems when they overpopulate, endangering more fragile animals, birds and reptiles.  They also risk starvation and disease. They no longer have natural predators.

Emus are generally a protected species in Australia, although there may be some culling in areas where they damage crops. Emu burgers are very tasty.

 

There was a program to try to eradicate them in WA, using the army in 1932. It was a dismal failure for several reasons. It became known as the Emu War.

 

Given it was led by an obviously British Major Gwynydd Purves Wynne-Aubrey Meredith, hardly surprising.

but the real reason is farmers don’t want them eating the grass.

Kangaroos have been in Australia for 40 million years. 
Everything was coping nicely until the convicts showed up.

The general kangaroo population is quite stable. Tree kangaroos are endangered due to loss of habitat.

 

Wolves in Britain died out in the 1800's. I guess they were not cuddly enough for you guys.

33% of the Australian population is of British origin. The British introduced foxes, cats, rabbits, and dogs. Three of which are predators in the wild.

 

The loss of mammals in Australia is not due to convicts, who had nothing but the clothes on their backs. It's caused by the stupid upper-crust tw@ts who ruled over them.

99% of kangaroo meat is not used for pet food as you claimed.

And kangaroos are not shot to save themselves, they are killed to save grazing grass for sheep and cattle as you claimed.
