I've always called plaited hair ( usually two ) pigtails, and non braided hair a ponytail, but google supports your definition, except they say a pigtail can be braided or not braided.

There's a male farang that lives near me that has a white braided pig tail. Or whatever you wanna call it. And on his chin he has made an attempt at growing a beard but he can't get it to grow long enough to plait. So he uses an elastic band to keep it tidy. I cannot descibe how stupid he looks. He obviously thinks himself as 'the handsome farang'. I wanna tell him to grow up but it would burst his bubble.

Pony tails are different from PLAITS, as they are not braided.

In my part of UK they were Pigtails.
