Software suggestion request for filing a Self Assessment Tax Return with HMRC

Featured Replies

Taxfiler, the tax software I have used to file my SA Tax Return in previous tax years will not be available for 2024/25.

Can anyone suggest software to file a UK SA Tax return with HMRC for the 2024/25 (that ends on 5th April) please?

I need to cover SA100 basic return and supplementary pages - SA105 Property Income, SA108 Capital Gains Tax, and SA109 Residency & summary tax calculation

I used taxfiler previously but their service has been suspended going forward. HMRC provide a list of compatible software suppliers but recommendation of taxfiler came from someone using in on this forum & it did the job well.

Many thanks for your suggestions in advance, KR

I use Andica.

Works fine for what you want. about 20 quid for one PC.

I second that - and I only used them for the first time last year after prevaricating for a long time and sending hard copies in the post........

I recommend TaxCalc for filing online. It costs about 30 GBP per year, but it is superb. Help, if required is excellent. It is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. I use the Linux version so my experience relates to that.

I have used TC to file my tax returns for over 10 years, and there have never been any problems with HMRC.

I've always used HMRC self assessment website. It's all quite simple.

Can you do that as a non resident Landloard.

I don't think you can. i have used 3rd party software for it.

But maybe it has changed with this new MTD that's just come in ?

I can't answer that, sorry.

I just know tgat my last self assessment was very easy. I found the HMRC website very user friendly.

If you are non-resident then in theory you shouldn't as the non-residence sheets (SA109) are not available using the website entry.

I know some people just ignore that - especially those gaming the pension system...............

If you are still officially a tax resident in the UK then no issue.

I believe SA105 is available online but as non-resident you should also fill in the SA109 which isn't...

MTD unfortunately will mean everybody with property income will need to purchase software to complete - depending on how much income you receive initially but everyone from 2028 from memory.

Yes

And it will be nice to claim the cost of the software as an expense back for once.

as a non resident landlord.

Hmm, that's what I did for a while - until it dawned on me one day that some eagle-eyed official at HMRC might do rather more than raise an eyebrow at the fact that the address stated in my return was a Thai one. Not to mention that the amount of my frozen State Pension income stated for the TY in question was rather less than would have been expected on the basis of the corresponding triple-lock rate!

And, as I recall, you're required to confirm specifically, when filing the standard online return, something along the lines that you're a British tax resident (which certainly wasn't true in my case).

Admittedly the risk of encountering an eagle-eyed HMRC official is probably small. But it does, I suspect, increase as the years roll by.
