Upgraded Laptop Always Needs a Hard Restart

Recommended Posts

Posted

I wanted to upgrade my laptop by replacing the hard drive with an SSD card and add more RAM and at first planned to do it by myself, but as I had it with me when buying the components I asked the shop to do it for me for 500 Baht.

Surprisingly, it took them nearly all day and they re-installed a new copy of Windows plus extra software that I don't need. Anyway, now whenever I start it up I have to do a hard restart, otherwise nothing happens.

Any ideas as to why? and what I can do about it.

I don't want to spend a whole day going back to the shop just yet.

sounds like the partition may be off.
I would shove in a thumb drive of windows and format it then start again
hate to ask but did you check the new component after you got home?

(do you ean you let it go to sleep with the lid down and upon lifting it does not kick in? if so check power options for lid and do a wee twaek before you go the reload way)

I shut it down via Windows shutdown. When I try to power on , nothing happens unless I do a hard reset.

by your description even though its a windows shutdown its not switching off
if your then hard resetting
the only way to now that for sure i guess would be noe how much battery you have
shut it down leave for an hour go back and check battery level

lets check we are both meaning the same hard reset holding power down 10 seconds then pressing power again to boot.

1. Make sure your power settings are configured correctly. Open the Control Panel, go to "Power Options," and check the settings for "Choose what the power button does" and "Choose what closing the lid does." Ensure that they are set to shut down the computer.

2. Ensure that your BIOS and drivers are up to date. Visit the manufacturer's website for your PC and motherboard to download the latest BIOS version and update any necessary drivers.

3. Try resetting the power options to their default settings. Open the Command Prompt as an administrator and type the following command: powercfg -restoredefaultschemes. Restart your computer and check if the issue is resolved.

4. Try disabling Fast Startup. Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do > Change settings that are currently unavailable > Uncheck the box next to Turn on fast startup (recommended) > Save changes.

thats from microsoft since its windows thats doing the shutdown

TRY THIS AS WELL

Using Windows tell it to restart a few times rather than power off
Then try the power off
it can also be the result of not full update install the restart will flush the cache

Thanks I'll have a look at the power settings later when I get 10 minutes to myself.

My hard reset is holding the power button down for about 20 seconds with the charger disconnected.

I actually checked BIOS and drivers for updates before I upgraded, but as the shop installed a new version of Windows maybe I should check again. I stood next the guy for for about 2 hours (I hate when they start changing too many settings) and later when I came back he told me that it would be some time and that he could send the laptop to me. Later, he told me that he had installed a new version of Windows ( together with quite a bit of software that I never use.)

I will try. I'll let you know how it goes

I went into the BIOS and disabled "usb boot"

All the options in "power settings" were set to "sleep" and I have now changed to "shut down". I closed the laptop down and restarted immediately. All went well.

I'll try again later today, but thanks a lot for your help

I was going to suggest resetting BIOS to defaults, as I imagined that the Tech had enabled USB Boot in order to install the new OS.

As an aside, which version and edition did he install?

nah, this was a windows power setting problem the laptop was going to sleep and in afew occassions the only way to get out of sleep is hard reset,
in previous versins of windows one had to also remove the battery to get it to shut down and restart.

the bios setting here was not doing anything the hard disk is on the list to
so the boot sequnece just goes through the list until it finds a boot

so metimes in install  if not done correctly the boot partitin can be off not in this case just windows

windows 24H2 build26100.3476

It seems it is Windows Pro, whereas before I used Windows home. I can see the product key has been activated, but I really don't know if it a pirate copy or not. I prefer to have a genuine version.

Yes, I saw the SSD drive listed in the boot sequence, but diabled the USB anyway. Maybe I should enable it, just in case I need it in the future.

If it were just the Power Settings, the issue wouldn't present itself when the OP utilised the Windows Shutdown method.

Power Settings affect the Power button, Sleep button and Lid closing and Screen.

There is only the Fast Start up setting that affects how the device closes down when using the Shutdown method.

No one knows what the Tech changed. Personally, I would restore BIOS to default and run a clean install/factory restore(if possible), after backing up any data.

Yes, I must admit I thought about doing a clean install. I backed up my data last week, so I am ok with that.

I don't know why he changed it, rather than to simply clone your old drive. Though a clean install is usually best.

He might have spent 100 baht to buy a Pro product key. Who knows? Then there are the other programs you state he has installed.

Not the best idea to let someone loose on your laptop.

Had you already upgraded to Windows 11? It seems he clean installed Windows 11 Pro, instead of upgrading to Windows 11 Home.

I didn't want to leave it with him, but after 2.5 hours of waiting I had to leave.

As I said I was going to add the extra RAM (remove the old 8 GB and add a 12 GB) and slot in the SSD drive myself. I really believed it was a 10 minute job. I was quite happy to ditch the old hard drive, and I am not sure what he did when he started reformatting it.

Anyway, I have just noticed that I still need a hard reset after a longer shutdown. I am beginning to wonder if there is a fault with the SSD drive although I ran Lenovo Vantage and all was well.

Time for a clean install!

you heard the saying dont shoot the messenger
Daignosing faults through text is not infallible
and my first suggestion was a clean install BUT THAT SAID we are talking WIN 11
and the beast that is 11 is worse than that before
so going by what we know most certainly in my case was everything up to 11
for myself a google a root around a few forums looking for others with this selective issue
just to help
though initailly the OP had success so.. go figure.
heres something i did not know

If you enabled the Fast Startup feature, Windows 11 will often hibernate instead of shutting down. Fast Startup closes your active programs and puts the computer into a low-energy hibernation state that allows you to boot up your computer much faster next time.

Disable Fast Startup
Fast Startup is also known as Windows Hybrid Shutdown. Follow these steps to disable it:

Open the Control Panel
Go to Hardware and Sound → Power Options
Click on Choose what the power button does
Go to Shutdown Settings
Uncheck the Turn on Fast Startup (recommended) option
Apply the changes

You didn't back your system up.  You should have done a disk image.  If you didn't.  Wow.  Want someone to blame?  Look in the mirror.  I suggest that you by a cheap license off of Lazada, download a copy of Win11, burn the installation to a USB, and reinstalled your operating system.  God only knows what they loaded on your computer.

Before you go rushing into the clean install, check if your laptop is 'eligible' for the upgrade/installation of Windows 11. Only some 330s have 8th Gen Intel CPU. If yours has a 7th Gen, you'll need to effect a bypass of the installation check in order to install.

Remember to delete ALL existing partitions on the SSD before cleanly installing Windows 11.

No, I didn't do a system back up. As I mentioned my plan was to buy SSD drive, extra ram and do the work at home, where of course I would have done a disk image. The guy in the shop offered to do the whole thing for 500 baht, so I agreed. I expected him simply to do the same. Make a disk image either as a back up or by copying from the hard drive.

Is the mic plugged into the motherboard via mini jack, or USB mic? Or an external sound card?
