Authorities disclosed on 2 April, details of an earlier incident in Phichit Province that claimed the life of a nine-year-old child who inadvertently picked up an improvised explosive device (IED) while playing along a roadside in Nong Phra Subdistrict, Wang Sai Phun District. The device exploded upon being handled, resulting in the child’s death.

 

According to reports, a total of five IEDs were discovered in the area. Three had already detonated before the child’s fatal encounter on March 23rd, when the fourth device exploded. A fifth unexploded device was later found by medical personnel from Wang Sai Phun and Nong Phra Health Promotion Hospitals. Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) personnel safely removed the device to prevent further casualties.

 

The incident has sparked public outrage, with social media users demanding justice for the child and questioning how such dangerous explosives were abandoned in a public area. A Facebook post by the page “Talad Lang Upgrade” highlighted the tragedy, raising concerns over the origins of the explosives and calling for accountability.

 

Another post, shared by a local Facebook user, urged media outlets and authorities to take action, expressing frustration that the case appeared to be receiving little attention.

 

In response, the Wang Sai Phun Subdistrict Administrative Organisation Engineering Department issued a public warning to residents, advising them to report any suspicious objects resembling explosives to the police immediately.
 

Authorities are now investigating the source of the explosives and working to ensure the safety of the community.

Phichit police have arrested two teenagers after a homemade bomb left on the roadside killed a nine-year-old boy in an incident that has shocked the local community.

 

The victim, identified as “Nong Nai,” was playing in his village when he picked up a suspicious object, which exploded in his hands. The devastating blast resulted in his immediate death. The boy’s grieving family has already held funeral rites, but until now, the case had seen little progress, prompting relatives to seek justice via social media.

 

For over ten days, the case remained stagnant, with police from Wang Sai Phun Police Station making no significant progress. Shockingly, officers reportedly told the boy’s mother that such incidents were a natural part of life and that teenage bomb-making was common. Furthermore, police initially wrote in their report that the family had no intention of pressing charges, a claim the boy’s mother, Mrs Rasamee, strongly denied.

 

“The moment I lost my son, my heart was already shattered. Then to hear police say such things, it just broke me even more,” she said.

 

It was only after the district chief and local officials intervened that the case gained momentum, leading to the arrests.

 

On 3 April, at 10:00, Pol Maj Gen Thadet Klomklieng, commander of Phichit provincial police, led a team of officers, bomb disposal experts (EOD), and local police to reinvestigate the scene in Wang Sai Phun district. They discovered another homemade explosive near the initial blast site. The bomb was safely detonated by the EOD team, and authorities temporarily sealed off the area for further searches.

 

An hour later, a joint police and administrative task force arrested two teenage suspects, identified as 17-year-old Mr Palm and 16-year-old Mr Man. During questioning, the pair admitted to making the explosive devices, allegedly to use during Songkran celebrations. They also revealed that four other local youths were involved, whom are now being pursued by police.

 

Following their arrest, both teenagers expressed remorse, repeatedly apologising to Mrs Rasamee, who was seen crying uncontrollably.

 

Meanwhile, Pol Maj Gen Thadet stated that efforts were ongoing to locate the remaining suspects and ensure the safety of local residents. Authorities have also contacted the provincial justice office to arrange compensation and support for the grieving family.

 

Local residents, including the boy’s grandfather, Mr Boonmee, 74, expressed deep sorrow over the incident. He recounted the harrowing moment he heard the explosion and rushed outside to find his grandson fatally wounded.

 

“There was another child with him, but he managed to step back just in time. My grandson, however, was hit directly by the blast,” he said.

 

Mrs Rasamee remains deeply distressed, not only by her son’s death but also by the way the case was initially handled.

 

“We just want justice. My son was just a curious child, and he had no idea what he was picking up,” she said.

 

Authorities have assured the family that further investigations will be conducted to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Police Chief Removed for Failing to Report Bomb Incident Involving 9-Year-Old

In a dramatic move, the Superintendent of Wang Sai Phun Police Station in Phichit province has been removed from his position for failing to report a shocking incident in which a 9-year-old boy died after picking up an explosive device.

 

The decision was made by Police Lieutenant General Kittisak Durongkhiboon, Commissioner of Provincial Police Region 6, who signed an urgent order reassigning Police Colonel Amornwit Mantong from his post. The removal comes in response to a serious dereliction of duty, after he failed to promptly notify authorities about the fatal incident.

 

According to the directive, an internal police radio message (No. 0021.122/311) clearly instructed all station heads to report any major, distressing, or newsworthy incidents to the Region 6 Commissioner within one hour of occurrence.

 

Despite this, no report was made following an event that took place in the Wang Sai Phun jurisdiction: a 9-year-old child had picked up what turned out to be an explosive device, which subsequently detonated, killing the boy.

 

To ensure a thorough investigation and uphold transparency and accountability, the following measures have been implemented:

 

1. Police Colonel Amornwit Mantong is to be reassigned to assist at the Region 6 Operations Centre, relieved of all duties in his previous role.

 

2. Police Colonel Sucheep Sittirat, Deputy Commander of Phichit Provincial Police, is appointed Acting Superintendent of Wang Sai Phun Police Station until further notice.

 

These changes are effective immediately and will remain in place until an official order declares otherwise.

 

The nature of the child’s death, coupled with the failure to report the incident, has prompted concerns about communication and procedural compliance within local law enforcement agencies. The investigation into both the circumstances of the explosion and the oversight in reporting is ongoing.
