Russian Man Arrested in Phuket for Year-long Visa Overstay

In a sweeping crackdown on illegal residents, Phuket's Provincial Immigration Bureau apprehended a Russian national yesterday for overstaying his visa by nearly a year. Part of an operation running from April 7 to 11, the initiative targets foreigners with visa violations and arrest warrants.

 

Officers arrested 30-year-old Sergey at a luxury hotel in central Phuket, where he admitted to overstaying his visa by 332 days. To evade detection, Sergey reportedly changed accommodations frequently. Though details of his stay remain sparse, it is unclear how he sustained himself financially in Thailand.

 

Charged under Section 81 of the Immigration Act for living in Thailand with an expired visa, Sergey faces potential penalties including a fine of up to 20,000 baht, imprisonment, or both. Deportation and a re-entry ban to Thailand will follow.

 

 

 

This latest arrest aligns with heightened actions against over-stayers in the region. Previous detentions include an Indian man in Phuket who overstayed for 668 days and a German man in Isaan found with methamphetamine. A British national was also detained in Chiang Mai for a staggering 25-year overstay.

 

As authorities tighten oversight, the message is clear: visa violations will not be tolerated. These efforts aim to ensure legal compliance and bolster security, reflecting Thailand's broader initiative to manage its foreign resident population effectively, reported The Thaiger.
