In response to a troubling rise in road accidents involving buses and jeepneys, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) of the Philippines is contemplating re-establishing driving academies specifically for public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers. This initiative comes after a bus company's operations were suspended following an accident on the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and an ongoing investigation into a fatal jeepney crash on Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City.

LTFRB spokesperson Ariel Inton highlighted growing concerns over 'kamote' or reckless drivers, noting that the issue has even drawn the attention of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. On a recent broadcast of Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon, Inton mentioned the possibility of reviving the proposal to institute dedicated driving academies for PUV drivers.

The suggested driving academy would offer rigorous training to ensure that drivers fully understand their personal responsibility and accountability. Inton emphasized that the proposed training should be preventive, conducted before accidents occur, rather than reactive.

Efforts to improve road safety are not new; earlier this year in March, the LTFRB mandated additional road safety courses for PUV drivers. However, implementation was paused due to concerns raised by the transport sector.

Additionally, Inton underscored the need for transport operators to be accountable for their drivers, countering the common excuse of driver resignation after accidents. He acknowledged that while road accidents might not be entirely eradicated, the aim is to significantly reduce their frequency.

As the LTFRB considers consultations with public transport stakeholders, the proposal for driving academies represents a proactive step towards enhancing driver training and improving road safety across the country, reported PhilStar.
