Donald Trump and his wife, Melania, met Pope Francis in Vatican City in 2017. The US president was one of the first world leaders to say that he would attend the pontiff’s funeral Credit: Vatican Pool

Donald Trump may be the most famous person on the planet and leader of the free world, but he could be deeply disappointed when he sees the seating plan for the funeral of Pope Francis.

The US president is hardly accustomed to playing second fiddle, but the arcane world of Vatican protocol suggests that he will not be in the front row of dignitaries when he arrives at St Peter’s Basilica on Saturday morning.

He might not even be in the second row.

As delegations from about 130 countries, including 50 heads of state and 10 reigning monarchs, make their way to Rome for the funeral, details are emerging of the seating arrangements and Mr Trump may have to settle for row three.

The Vatican has not released official details yet, but clues can be gleaned from the last funeral of a sitting pope – that of the Polish pontiff John Paul II in 2005.

Foreign dignitaries will be seated in a large block to one side of Francis’s coffin, while archbishops, bishops, patriarchs and cardinals – the red-robed “princes of the Church” – will be seated opposite them.

The Holy See will give precedence to Catholic royalty, who will take pride of place in the front row of seating.

Next come non-Catholic royals such as the Prince of Wales, who will attend the funeral on behalf of King Charles III, along with the King and Queen of Sweden and the Crown Prince and Crown Princess of Norway.

Then come world leaders, heads of state and other foreign dignitaries, including Mr Trump, as well as Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission president ; Giorgia Meloni, the Italian prime minister; and Javier Milei, the president of Argentina – Pope Francis’s home country.

For the funeral, the world leaders will be seated in alphabetical order according to the name of their country in French – as it was the traditional language of diplomacy when the protocols were made.

Is that the most important thin g to you ?

Who cares which seat Donald will sit in !!!!!!!!!

Its like Beatlemania all over again

I was interested in the seating of the Protestant Royals. With the death of the Pope, until the next Pope is selected, King Charles III occupies a unique position as the only European Head of State who is also head of a church. However, that seems to not matter to those in charge of Vatican protocol. I am sure His Majesty is not put out by that.

It is your (false) presumption that anything in this story is "the most important thing" to me. Its News, and this is a News section.

The Conservative Party supporting Daily Telegraph goes on to state:

Mr Trump mocked his predecessor, Joe Biden, for where he was seated during Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral, claiming it was a sign of America’s diminished stature on the world stage, and insisting he would have been placed much farther forward if still in office.

Mr Biden was seated on row 14, such was the protocol that governors-general of the realms that retain the monarch as their head of state, were seated first with and elected Commonwealth leaders behind them.

And, indeed, it is possible to validate that claim from a report issued by GB News:

The former US President said that, had he still been in office, he would have been seated closer to the front.

Writing on Truth Social – his social media platform – he argued that it showed the standing of the US had fallen during Mr Biden's tenure as president.

He said: "This is what’s happened to America in just two short years. No respect!

"However, a good time for our President to get to know the leaders of certain Third World countries.

"If I were president, they wouldn’t have sat me back there – and our Country would be much different than it is right now!

And multiple other sources, if you doubt the veracity of this reportage.

If you remember Beatlemania, I guess you are approaching your 80s, or have surpassed that milestone.
