Accident Man Killed Instantly After Stepping Behind Broken-Down Van on Expressway

A 48-year-old man was killed on the afternoon of 13 May, after being struck by a lorry while standing behind his broken-down van on a busy expressway in Samut Prakan province.

 

The fatal collision occurred at approximately 13:00, on the inbound Burapha Withi Expressway, at kilometre marker 28 in Bang Bo district, near the Khlong Phra Ong Chao Chaiyanuchit Bridge. The Burapha Withi Expressway traffic control centre received a report of a serious collision and promptly dispatched rescue units, including the Poh Teck Tung Foundation.

 

Upon arrival, emergency responders found a privately-owned van with Bangkok registration, severely damaged at the rear and resting against the left-side barrier. Beneath the vehicle, they discovered the body of Mr. Winai Mion, who had died instantly after being struck and his body thrown under the van.

The other vehicle involved, a white six-wheeled Isuzu lorry with Chanthaburi plates, was found nearby with damage to its front-left side. The lorry driver, Mr. Sarayut Sapsor 36, remained at the scene and cooperated fully with police. Alcohol testing confirmed that he had not been drinking at the time of the incident.

 

Mr. Sarayut told police he had been driving in the left lane when the vehicle in front of him suddenly swerved to avoid the broken-down van. Unable to react in time, he collided directly with the rear of the stationary van. Mr. Winai had exited the vehicle and was standing at the back when he was hit and crushed.

 

Traffic authorities closed off the left lane temporarily, resulting in significant congestion stretching for several kilometres.

 

Mr. Winai’s body has been sent to the Ramathibodi Chakri Naruebodindra forensic institute for examination. Police have recorded the incident and will notify the deceased’s family. Mr. Sarayut was taken to Bang Bo Police Station for further questioning and will face charges of reckless driving causing death.

 

Authorities continue to investigate the incident.
