Think about it this way.

Constantly-tanned skin turns to a leathery texture over time. Even though the skin releases melanin when exposed to radiation, it inevitably ends up damaging skin. Elastic fibers clump together after prolonged excessive exposure. Another effect is melanin can get stuck in one place and create freckles/moles , the most common starting places for melanoma.

No matter how well-controlled and gradual tanning is, the effects of UV rays will catch up and accelerate aging. Maintaining a light complexion is healthy, as long as there's enough to allow vitamin D synthesis.

Of course those "whitening" products are useless, but avoiding the sun is practical. You don't age as quickly and pale skin IMO looks better. I stay out of the sun too, a few minutes and that Celtic Curse gets to me and I turn beet-red. It's only natural that people would want to shield themselves from the sun.

Westerners are always bashing Thais and their obsession for fair skin.

Take a close look in the mirror, us Westerners are also infatuated by skin colour. Just as Thai women are splashing on their whitening lotion, Western tourists are lazed on a beach hoping for dark skin - even crazier than the Thais in that they are risking their lives with the possibility of skin cancer.

Just as 'fair= well-off' in Thailand, 'tanned = well-off' in much of the western world. Having tanned skin during the western winters is just 'ego', showing off to others that you have had the money to go on vacation to an exotic country. You haven't had to endure work for a couple of weeks.

So, before anyone continues to take the pish out of Thais, take a look in the mirror and take the pish out of the general farang mentality first.

That's right. I remember my Thai girlfriend's expression of disbelieve when I translated an advert we saw posted on the front window of a pharmacy in Europe. It said something like "This amazing cream will make your skin darker in no time at all, and it will stay dark for months"

white skin is widely accepted as being more attractive, so naturally it is advertised. i doubt that any of these lotions actually work.

the reason why Thais think white skin looks better has nothing to do with brainwashing, it just simply looks better. Thats like asking, why do people think guys with defined stomachs look better then guys who are obese?

:D Nice point about the fattys. (I'm one).

But as for Thai women....the classical beauty has always been the "Chiang Mai" girl. High cheekbones, eyes not too obviously slanted, and a white skin.

It's just not in Thailand. I have Burmese friend who was from a very wealthy family in Burma until the socialists took thier money and land. She was educated in the best public schools in England. She told me that when a Burmese child was born the first question that was asked (after Boy or Girl?) was,"Is It Fair?", meaning "Is the child fair-skinned".

:o
