I was in 7/11, just grabbing my usual stuff, when a 7/11 employee who I have seen many times before walked passed me, pulled down her face mask and gave me the biggest smile one can imagine. My faith in Thai humanity has been restored, at least for a while.

When Thai women genuinely smile, they are the most beautiful people on Earth.

🙂

Don't know if this is a phony post but...

Thai smiles, I see them every day.

If no one is smiling at you the reason may be your dynamic and vibe with others.

If you don't accept the noticeable change in the 'Thai smile' then you don't know much about Thailand.................at least the tourist areas.

Thai people smile at me all day long. Nonstop smiling. So much smiling. Smiling, the likes of which the world has never seen before. There is so much smiling I'm even getting tired of all the smiling. I've never seem so much smiling before. Everyone tells me that Thais are great smilers and that they smile a lot. Even the best people say they are terrific smilers. Too much smiling. What is wrong with you? Smile a little, please.

Thais smile all the time, sure, some of them are forced smiles, but bye and large I think they are genuine.

This evening I popped out to do a bit of shopping in my local small town. The girl in the bar I frequent from time to time gave me a bright smile and a wave when I rode past, the girl in the butchers smiled, the cashier at Lotus smiled, as she practiced her (wildly inaccurate) use of English numbers.

Now I consider myself vaguely presentable, and do take some care over my appearance, but I am certainly not magnificently handsome, nor am I obviously affluent. But I like being smiled at as the default greeting, and try to respond.

"Don't know much about Thailand", so your subjective opinion decides who knows what?.

I know my experience, I live here and work here and as I said Thai people smile at me every day.

So your experience is different?

There could be many reasons for that; might not have 100% to do with Thai people.

Whatever your experience, wherever it is, does not change the accepted consensus - and my experiences over 20 years - that the Thai smile is not what it was.

It is actually more genuine in Cambodia.

I've been here for 20 years, and haven't noticed any difference at all... in fact, there have been people on here who have been whining about the decline of the Thai smile for the last 20 years I've been on this forum.

Having said that, worrying about how much people are smiling at you is quite weird. I prefer no smile to fake smiles, and don't care too much if people smile or not.

Thai people often smile at the mentally infirm. It  allows them to avoid an unwanted exchange. Hopefully, you were not drooling at the time.

The posts from each new version of you keep getting duller, more uninteresting and increasingly forgettable. Honestly, the next time you throw a tantrum and vanish for a month or so, I can’t think of a single reason you should bother clicking the AN Sign Up button again after your hangover wears off.
