Is Trump's war on academia his dumbest move yet?

Recommended Posts

Trump is quickly turning the US from the most favored destination for foreign students to something close to the opposite, and in the process will miss out on an unknown number of highly talented individuals.

It's hard to rank all the stupid moves made by Trump the last months but this has gotta be high on the list. Totally pointless and avoidable.

The Economist: Demand for American degrees has already hit covid-era lows

https://archive.ph/fPH0L

"SOME OF AMERICA’S most valuable companies were built by people who came to America as students. Elon Musk was born in South Africa and lived in Canada before studying physics at the University of Pennsylvania, Patrick and John Collison moved from Ireland to attend MIT and Harvard, respectively, before founding Stripe, a digital payments company. All told, more than half of America’s billion-dollar start-ups were founded by at least one immigrant; a quarter have a founder who arrived as a student."

Trump is anti-science. Progress in science is essential for any nation.

It's no accident South Korea has one of the world's strongest economies, along with the highest percentage of scientists and engineers in its workforce.

Every cloud has a silver lining. Australia will get the students instead.

Maybe since youre not jewish you dont care. If the discrimination were against blacks then guess what youd be doing

You know, I'm generally able to decode probably close to 99% of posts, even from those who seem to think that grammar is optional.

But you post makes no sense at all - none. Both sentences, separate or seen together, are completely nonsensical.

Are you OK, buddy?

I'm sure you can adopt a few jihadi "students" if you have enough $$. Might want to swap out the kitchen cutlery for plastic? Meanwhile I think the chants of river to the sea and death to Jews are unwelcome to the rest of us. But I do understand that some (whackos) support the violent rhetoric they spew and are triggered by them getting sent back home.

Anti-science?  No, just anti anything that doesn't agree with his warped-speed worldview.

RFK Jr. may bar government scientists from publishing in medical journals

Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said he will ban government scientists from publishing in leading medical journals and proposed creating an “in-house” publication by the department.

“We are probably going to stop publishing in the Lancet, the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA and those other journals because they are all corrupt,” Kennedy said during an episode of “The Ultimate Human” podcast.

"Corrupt" means not following the regime's preferred talking points, so the government will create their own fake journals to disseminate their fake science.

Those international students wanting quality higher education will gravitate to China and Russia where advanced STEM degrees are valued above Masters and PhDs in business, humanities, and gender studies.  It's just another thing that will make the US less relevant on the world stage.

I seriously doubt that non-Russian and non-Chinese students will head to those two countries in significant numbers. My guess would be Western Europe and Australia.

More likely that International students, like the Chinese, will be accused of "stealing valuable knowledge from university courses" (gawd no!) and then going back to their own countries where they'll build advanced manufacturing produces which out-compete the United States who will then need to "go to war with those evil countries who now make and sell produces that the US can no loner produce" in order to level the playing field in favor of "the most exceptional country in the world."  "Make America Great Again" by bombing the hell out of everyone who are competitors on the global economic stage.  This will be called "Democracy" and "Peace Through Strength!"

If South Korea is so great why wouldn’t they gravitate there?

You can have all the agitators, racist and jihadist and leftists.

They’ll fit in perfectly at KANGAROO U.

Time will tell.

Western Europe and commonwealth countries are losing their relevance too.  Hey, It wouldn't take too much of a push to turn you into a Republican Neo-con the way you're talking now BLMFem.

You mean an old school Republican from back before they turned it into a Jim Jones 2.0 s*** show? Well, I was never that far away (except on various social issues) anyway. Always a centrist.

And my family are under strict orders that if I suffer brain damage and turn MAGA they must shoot me immediately.😆

No time to follow this thread too closely, but advanced college degrees are becoming less and less relevant.

Some people are predicting massive white collar job loss by 2030 due to AI taking over.

Probably safer to get a plumber's licence if you want a job.

Well, I'm the OP who wrote the OP and the OP is OK.

No idea why you would call it racist, and to be perfectly honest, I don't care.

People investing heavily into degrees might be wasting their money, but hard to predict the future.

AI may get delayed.

Sorry, no comment about bitcoin.

It will seem obvious in retrospect. I graduated in 2009, i see how much more worthless degrees have gotten since then. All it means to me now are the memories. My tuition wasnt nearly as much as kids are paying now
