Vietnam Airlines, the national flag carrier, marked a significant milestone on 1st June as it celebrated its 30th anniversary in Hanoi, setting ambitious targets for the future. Honoured with the Prime Minister’s Certificate of Merit, the airline was recognised for its remarkable contributions to Vietnam’s socio-economic development and international integration.

Since its establishment in 1995, Vietnam Airlines has evolved from the heroic 919 Transport Aviation Regiment into a symbol of national identity and cultural pride. It has played a crucial role in advancing Vietnam’s domestic and international missions, from rescue operations in Libya to humanitarian flights during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, speaking at the ceremony, highlighted the airline’s role in enhancing Vietnam's reputation globally and urged it to accelerate its digital transformation and invest in environmentally sustainable growth. He praised Vietnam Airlines for its humanitarian efforts and its contribution to Vietnam’s global competitiveness.

Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Vietnam Airlines demonstrated resilience, emerging stronger with guided support from the government. It has served 350 million passengers, transported 4.7 million tonnes of cargo, and operates nearly 100 routes, connecting Vietnam to over 1,000 destinations through the SkyTeam alliance.

A pivotal moment for the airline was its 2015 equitisation, which attracted strategic investors, improved governance, and boosted efficiency. From 1995 to 2024, Vietnam Airlines contributed approximately VND68 trillion ($2.72 billion) to the state budget. In 2024, it reported consolidated revenue of $4.52 billion and a record post-tax profit of $318.4 million, with growth persisting into 2025.

Vietnam Airlines’ digital transformation efforts have enhanced customer experience and competitiveness, earning it global accolades, such as a four-star rating from Skytrax and a 5-star Airline rating from APEX. It has also been recognised at the World Travel Awards and Vietnam Tourism Awards among other honours.

Beyond aviation, the airline promotes Vietnam’s cultural heritage internationally and has expanded cooperation with major global carriers. Chairman Dang Ngoc Hoa expressed pride in the airline’s role as a symbol of modern, globally integrated Vietnam, with recognisable elements like the golden lotus emblem and traditional "ao dai."

Looking ahead, Vietnam Airlines aims to achieve 5-star international airline status by 2030. Plans include modernising its fleet, expanding its global network, enhancing services, and adopting advanced technologies. The airline remains focused on fostering a capable workforce to further deepen its international integration and maintain its standing as a beacon of Vietnam’s aspirations and cultural reach on the global stage.
