Report 150,000 Expected at Victory Monument Protest Demanding PM Paetongtarn’s Resignation

BANGKOK –  Leaders of the "Ruam Palang Paendin" group took to Victory Monument to prepare for a highly anticipated mass protest scheduled for June 28. The rally seeks the resignation of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and demands that all coalition parties withdraw from the government.

 

This significant demonstration is expected to draw a crowd of more than 150,000 people.

 

Jatuporn Promphan, a leading figure in the protest movement, has stated that the turnout is hoped to rival the recent gathering of 150,000 Cambodians who rallied in Phnom Penh.

 

That event was in support of the Cambodian government amid an ongoing border dispute with Thailand. Jatuporn emphasised that their protest is not an incitement for military intervention but aims to safeguard national territory, which they believe is at risk due to the prime minister's perceived mishandling of the border issue.

 

The demonstration is set to run from 4pm to 9pm, and Jatuporn expressed hopes that law enforcement and government authorities will not attempt to thwart the rally. The group insists on a peaceful protest, intended as a patriotic stand rather than a bid for chaos.

 

Panthep Puapongpan, another prominent protest leader, explained the symbolic choice of Victory Monument as the venue. The monument commemorates Thailand's reclaiming of lost territories from French colonial forces, aligning with the group's message of national sovereignty. They have made plans to direct loudspeakers away from nearby hospitals to minimise disruption for patients.

 

Panthep also addressed public discourse regarding accusations against Prime Minister Paetongtarn. Supporters claim she did not leak a recorded phone conversation with Cambodian leader Hun Sen.

 

However, Panthep urged the public to focus on the content of the conversation, implying its significance in their cause.

 

The protest marks a pivotal moment in Thailand's political landscape, potentially influencing future government dynamics. The outcome is yet to be determined, but the rally's scale signifies a significant public discontent with current leadership.

Where were all these protesters, when the present rulers just threw out 14+ million votes of the Move Forward party which allowed the present composition of government in the first place?
