I have to buy some stuff for a birthday party. (Not mine, no greetings expected here)

Some friends told me they would find no significant difference in taste, especially to whiskey.

I never tried any of that.

So, I'm not an expert in this stuff.

I’m not a drinker, though I’m really sorry for those who drink that caustic urinal waste. Have some self respect and get some Johnny Walker or Bushmills

I tried some a few weekends ago for the first time and couldn't finish the cup. I found it very sweet and syrupy.

Sangsom is rum not whisky but nice. With coke they all taste fine.

Real rum or a mix? Where to buy? Is it similar to brown Bacardi?

Crap blended scotch. Buy single malt or dont bother. Blended scotch is inferior to rum or bourbon.

What was that brand, and did you take it with a mixer?  Sang Som, perhaps?

Not a drinker, then why pipe up to mention brand names?

Real rum, A good friend from Cuba loves Sang Som. I prefer Hong Thong, myself.

The blue is ok.

But some people don't like the price tag.

And single malt tastes like an ashtray. It is too hot here for Scotch of any kind but up to you. Drink what you like and let others do the same.

It really isn't worth it for what you get.

Black goes well with Coke and soda, which is how the locals drink it, but even that has gotten a bit silly price-wise.

But it's what average Thais consider to be a top shelf whiskey, I don't think they care what it tastes like. You'd only buy  a single malt for someone really special and since the OP didn't bother to elaborate, I'm assuming the birthday boy or girl is an average Joe just like him.

Totally agree about price.

Had a mate who used to bring me over a bottle of Scapa now and again from the uk.

Nectar.  Think  Scapa is  closed down now.

What you had was probably rum

The 8 year single malt bend is better than the 10 year, gone up though 800+

You might as well bring rat poison.

Several recent studies are proving how terrible any amount of alcohol (ethanol) is for the human body.

Just bring some water maybe impress them with Evian.

I think this is true - the cultural palette just isn't here.
