Five Thai nationals were arrested after attempting to illegally cross back into Thailand from Cambodia, having allegedly lost all their money gambling at a casino in Poipet. Four of the men had reportedly pawned their passports to continue gambling before deciding to return home without documents.

The arrests were made by the Burapha Force, led by Colonel Chainarong Kasee of the Aranyaprathet Task Force, in collaboration with paramilitary forces from Unit 1201. The group was intercepted on foot while trying to cross the border into Aranyaprathet District, Sa Kaeo Province, via an unregulated forest route.

Initial investigations revealed that four of the individuals had travelled independently to Poipet months earlier to gamble at the city’s casinos. While there, they became acquainted through shared tables and eventually suffered heavy financial losses. Desperate to recoup their losses, they reportedly pawned their passports to obtain more gambling funds, only to end up completely destitute and unable to return legally to Thailand.

Stranded in Cambodia with no identification or means of transportation, the group encountered Mr. Yongyut, a 33-year-old former assistant chef who had overstayed his visa and was also seeking a way back home. The five decided to return together by foot using a natural border crossing.

However, their attempt was foiled as they reached Thai territory. Border patrol units detained them and transferred the group to Khlong Luek Police Station for legal processing. They face charges of illegal border crossing.

Authorities continue to warn Thai citizens of the dangers associated with gambling abroad, particularly in neighbouring countries where casino operations remain largely unregulated and debt enforcement is harsh. This case has drawn renewed attention to the social costs of cross-border gambling and the risks involved in informal attempts to return home.
