Cambodia’s General Department of Immigration has denied social media claims that it is targeting certain nationalities with tougher visa restrictions, insisting recent scrutiny reflects standard legal procedure rather than new policy.

The statement, issued on Monday, comes in response to widespread online speculation suggesting immigration police had tightened entry and visa extension processes for some foreign nationals.

Officials stressed that Cambodia’s immigration rules remain unchanged. Under existing law, entry or extension of stay can be refused if a traveller fails to meet key requirements—such as a clear travel purpose, sufficient financial support, or a local guarantor. Authorities may also deny visas if they believe an individual poses a risk to public order or national security.

“The department has not introduced new restrictions,” the statement read. “These are routine duties in line with existing laws, applied equally to all foreigners.”

The clarification follows a noticeable uptick in reports of visa delays and rejections, prompting concern among expatriate communities and online commentators.

Authorities attribute the heightened vigilance to a surge in attempted entries by individuals suspected of criminal activity abroad. The department said this has prompted increased scrutiny at entry points, aimed at preventing cross-border crime, trafficking, and threats to public order.

While acknowledging the need for caution, officials reiterated that there is no blanket ban or discrimination against any nationality. They emphasised that the immigration police are simply exercising due diligence in line with national and international obligations.

The statement appears aimed at quelling anxiety among travellers and long-term residents amid a growing atmosphere of uncertainty.

For now, Cambodia’s immigration stance remains officially unchanged—but with border officials on alert, travellers should be prepared for closer checks.
