EU ready to hit US with 21-bln-euro tariff list, Italy foreign minister says

Bilateral meeting between German and Italian foreign ministers, in Rome

The European Union has prepared a package of retaliatory tariffs worth €21 billion ($24.5 billion) on U.S. goods, in case ongoing trade talks fail to yield an agreement, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said on Monday in an interview with Il Messaggero.

Tajani's comments follow U.S. President Donald Trump’s renewed threats on Saturday to impose a 30% tariff on goods imported from Mexico and the EU starting August 1. The threat comes after weeks of stalled negotiations with key trading partners.

The EU, seeking to avoid further escalation, announced on Sunday it would extend its freeze on countermeasures until early August, leaving room for continued dialogue.

Tajani warned that if negotiations fail entirely, the initial €21 billion in tariffs could be followed by a second wave. Despite the preparations, he expressed optimism. “I believe it is still possible to reach an agreement,” he said, adding, “Tariffs hurt everyone, starting with the United States. If stock markets fall, that puts the pensions and savings of Americans at risk.”

He reiterated the EU’s long-term vision of “zero tariffs” and a fully open market between the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and Europe.

Tajani also suggested the European Central Bank consider reviving a quantitative easing programme and further rate cuts to support the eurozone economy amid economic uncertainty.

Meanwhile, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated he would work closely with French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to find a solution to the mounting transatlantic trade conflict.

On Monday, European Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič said talks with Washington were progressing toward a balanced outcome but warned that a 30% tariff would “practically eliminate” trade between the two regions.

Tariffs are usually counterproductive for all involved if superficially attractive to some.

Why would the EU want economic revenge? Just don't buy American products if it upsets you.

Same reason they wanted to punish Britain for Brexit.

The totalitarian, deeply authoritarian protectionist racket doesn't like it when the shoe is on the other foot. It's fine for them to freeze out those who are not in "the club" but they expect everyone else to buy their stuff regardless.

Time for the spiteful little technocrats to wake up and smell the coffee.

Yes we are paying with a better deal than the EU. 😄

The EU was built on protectionism. It is their raison d'etre. Yet they don't like it when the US does the same thing. Karma biting hard.

Can someone remind me why the US needs trade with the EU?

Trump is seeking reciprocity.

So for protectionist rackets like the EU, they are indeed going to feel what it's like to face trade barriers and large tariffs.

Post Brexit Global Britain has received a far better deal.

What goes around comes around.

Another benefit of Brexit. You're welcome.

Utter tripe, of course. And in a few years you will rejoin the EU. How will you deal with that buddy, on a personal level I mean?

The US and the rest of the West is busy beating the snot out of each other with tariffs as China, Russia, India, the BRICS and the Global South negotiate trade deals and partnerships.  Of course, the West threatens China, Russia, India, the BRICS and the Global South with tariffs, sanctions, and war which in turn pushes them closer together and makes cutting themselves off from trade with the West and even higher priority.

The death throes of dying Empire.  It's ugly but in the end?  Good riddance.

Trump is lying, as usual. You are just diffusing Trump's propaganda. The U.S. was as protective as the EU, if not more. Ex. there is no Buy European Act.

Europeans are buying a lot of American brands. The main reason for the deficit is the decision by U.S. firms to outsource production. By contrast, European firms tended to outsource a significant share of production inside the EU, in Eastern European countries.

BTW, it's Trump 1.0 who trashed the TTIP deal!:coffee1:

Labour won't be in power long enough to rejoin.

The EU won't be around much longer anyway. Trump's tariffs will hit the failing federalist protectionst racket hard.

What about 'em?  Trump wants Europe to buy 'merkan wunder waffles and gift them to the ethnic cleansing regime.  That's a win-win-win!  Wins for American arms manufacturers, lobbyists and congressional re-election campaigns.  Not so much for Europa.

NATO was designed IMO as a structure for US power projection and an outlet to sell US arms.  With no Warsaw Pact, it's simply an obsolete ponzi in search of a new grift.

Europa can make all the wunder waffles they themselves need, as they have no enemies.  The only real threat is the tide of immigrants storming the borders which come as a direct result of NATO meddling in the middle east and ongoing regime change operations.

Put NATO on a diet, secure your borders, stop meddling and enjoy your peace dividends.  Let the middle east settle down and you can return most of those stabby, moderate headchoppers to their home countries.

With a $230 billion usd trade deficit, it definitely is good for the EU economy. But for the US, there's $230 billion more going out than coming in.

That won't be a diet. It will be the end of NATO.

So your solution is to stop all trade with the EU? Yes, that sounds like a cunning plan, indeed......:coffee1:
