In the meantime I ask Google.

Actually there is nothing what they could buy somewhere else:

machinery, mineral oils and fuels, industrial machinery, iron & steel, precious stones & metals, and plastics

You need to take one more step and run your AI through a grammar checker.  Because it doesn't make sense.

  • Thailand doesn't want a "Free Market."  They want to impose tariffs on others in the name of domestic protectionism while demanding that other countries, like the US, to not levy tariffs on Thailand's

  • hilarious, these import taxes protect the cartel that suppies the farmers with fertilizers etc, a lucrative protected business

The thinking is so muddled here and all in support of protecting “special” (wealthy) pinterests. Have to wonder how Vietnam and Indonesia managed the 0% tariffs on US imports … both members of ASEAN. Thai’s abhor a level playing field.

That's Google. Sorry, that I can't help you. Maybe try "Google translate" and your language.

Sure you can.  Think for yourself instead of parroting Google, the most recent proof that Garbage in -> Garbage out.  (as if we needed more proof).

Wonder whether switching to carnaroli risotto rice might be more profitable.  Still rice, so same expertise but has high price.  The major cost would be transport to markets in Europe, specifically Italy.  Might be more profitable.

Good point. It's a creative idea and I think the same applies to the growing of fruits like lychee and durian. There are certain varieties that seem to command a huge premium, they would certainly be worth seeking out.

It's very, very difficult to defend Thailand when it comes to tariffs, as they are fairly mindless with regard to the use of tariffs, and they have absolutely no as to how damaging it is to their economy and their tourism industry.

Having said that I like the idea of a nation standing up to the US, and Trump's ridiculously arrogant and erroneous tariff policies. After all according to many economists what made the American economy so great since World War II, was the lack of tariffs. It created the largest and most dynamic economy in the world amongst a few other factors. There is no doubt that Trump's policies and idiocy are going to are going to end up shrinking the US economy.

If farmers need loans to continue, their business models cannot be sustainable.

Your average Thai farmer is already in debt to the BAAC ,a government backed bank for the farmers and farming co-op's, with the prices farmers are getting they is not much chance of the business model being sustainable, corn farmers in my area are losing they  crops due to no rain, a few crops that ae being harvested the price is not enough to make any money .

I would say these soft loans would be though the BAAC ,so not a lot of change they.

Remember Thai farmers, bar rice farmers, like farmers in our country's do not get any government subsidies

Yeah right, let's come back in 2 years and see how this plays out.

US is around 30% of global GDP and it has solid geopolitical allies (despite current posturing) in the Anglosphere, EU, Japan & Middle East, that make up another 30% or so.

These tariffs are impacting only the 18% of US economy linked to goods, the other 82% is services based.

The only current economic competitor is China, with around 20% of global GDP, 5x the population of US and a misfiring economy. We can see how they treat their "friends" with their massive trade surplus with a poorer country in Thailand.

As diplomatic channels operate, Thailand continues to prioritise its domestic economy. Julaphan emphasised that maintaining the livelihoods of the private sector and farmers is paramount, along with safeguarding these sectors against adverse trade negotiations.

The amusing thing is that the only loans they can obtain are for purchasing fertilizer.

Does anyone see a problem here?

Only their votes; after that, they are nothing more than serfs.

This is why the People's Party is kicking PT assets.  PTP have always counted on the poor, uneducated farmer for support.  Now that poor, uneducated farmer are seeing things through the eyes of their tech-savvy kids and finding out that they're getting screwed by Thaksin.

You are close. But China is not helping Thailand; look at all the businesses that are closing and international companies that are moving.

The US does grow a lot of rice they export about half of it.

Not sure the Japanese consumer wants it though. Japanese rice is quite different to other rice. And Thailand has quite a bit of its own. That’s why it exports so much!

You mean, why does wine from Australia. 5,000 KM ++ from Thailand, that then has to pass customs, be put on trucks, and distributed to retail operations in Thailand cost more than it does in Australia?  Plus ... Thailand does charge VAT (Value Added Tax) on Australian wines, along with other taxes and duties upon import. The standard VAT rate in Thailand is 7%. Additionally, imported wines are subject to various other taxes, including excise taxes, municipal taxes, and health taxes. So, are you SURE " the importer charging whatever he feels like??" 555!!

(Pro Tip - "Google is your friend" )

Looking at shipping costs etc, i say your answer is complete <deleted>.

Show me where in my post I said China is helping Thailand...

My rice farming wife tells me the government has reduced the standard subsidy from tb1000 per rai down to tb500 per rai, with a 10-rai maximum per farmer.  And the government will subsidize the purchase of fertilizer by tb500 per bag (10 bags max), providing they submit receipts.  We haven’t heard of any loans to farmers per se.

Australian wine prices in Thailand are generally higher than in Australia due to taxes and import costs. While free trade agreements have reduced tariffs, high excise taxes in Thailand still significantly inflate the retail price of imported wine. I think what you are missing here is that the original conversation was about retailers price gouging consumers.  I am not saying that Australian wine is not more expensive here than in Oz, I am saying the price difference is via lots of price increasing variables BEFORE a retailer even gets their hands on a bottle.  If you are talking about the price of wine in a restaurant or bar, then you simply have no understanding of the hospitality business and alcohol pricing models, which at the 4 star + level are often 100% (or more) mark up.  If you are going to cherry pick ONLY shipping costs, then let me wish you a nice day and let's just end this thread.

Introduce loans which they can't pay, then buy them out and they become slaves on what was once theirs

Often if exporting, they would need to grow the variety that the proposed market wishes - traditional tastes are very specific.  But if it generates more profit it is worth considering.  I mentioned an example earlier about investigating the growing of carnaroli rise which is a high value quality rice used for risotto.  Obviously, if exported out of thailand then transport costs must be factored in.   Some rice varieties might make a bigger profit than Thai varieties if grow on a large enough scale for export.

To me when you say "protecting Chinese businesses inside Thailand" that says that Thais are protecting chinese as we know very little of the profit stays in thailand

You might say that the Thai government is exuberant over their exorbitant tax rates. You're welcome.
