Of course. Can’t go charging Thais.

Nowhere does it say that the fee will only be charged to foreigners. Airport departure tax is paid by all passengers, regardless of nationality.

It hasn't risen for some time so an increase is probably due.

Thailand has one of the cheapest Airport Taxes - plenty of bashing going on here without people realising how high the taxes are in their own countries.

In a move aimed at bolstering infrastructure, Thailand's Transport Ministry has tasked Airports of Thailand (AoT) with exploring a potential increase in the Passenger Service Charge (PSC) at six major airports. The charge for departing passengers may see a rise of 100 Thai Baht, as the country examines its fees compared to international standards.

Beat me to it, thank you. Nice to see someone who can engage brain before bashing their keyboard in faux outrage.

Increasing it by 100 baht is completely unnoticeable as it is built in the ticket cost and their retrieve it from the airlines. If my Emirates flight was 42,000 baht and now it is 42,100 baht I'm cancelling my holiday!! Seems like most posters would.

But but but road accidents, air quality, border conflicts, someone once had a taxi that didn't turn on the meter - the sky is falllliiiinnnnggggggggg!!

And people crying racism. Get a grip.

How on earth is a 100 baht increase in an international ticket fee going to drive anyone away? Do you know how much you currently pay in airport fees in any other country you ever fly to? Do you ask your airline how much the airport fees are when you book? Of course not, no one does.

100 baht on top of a passenger fee that is one of the lowest around and that most people don't even realise is part of a ticket price.

Thailand is £17.

Singapore is £3.

The service, convenience and cleanliness of Singapore Airport is light years ahead of Thailand!

Thailand wants to increase high value and medical tourism.

Concerned visitor numbers down.

Now it wants to penalise visitors with an increase in PSC.

Firstly... no its not... Changi is and always has been a great Airport, but its not light years ahead of Thailand...  but I would agree Changi is better - but that does not mean Suvarnabumi is bad... BKK is also a good airport.

Thailand also has 6 Airports Ran by AOT (Airports of Thailand) the tax is distributed across them.

But, if you want to cherry pick..  look at the UK airports and then compare the quality to Thailand Vs the airport tax - thats why I gave a 'full example' for a balanced perspective....  Thailands Airport Tax is on the low side.

Many posters here would be the first to complain when things are imperfect here, some already do - at the slightest issue such as a tax increase which is hardly unreasonable... But,  Thailand can do no right in the eyes of some - but realistically, the Airport tax Charged by Thailand is well within the 'ball park'...

... This is not dual pricing or anti tourist etc...   If you want to complain about high Airport taxes - complain about the UK... Look at the differences in ticket prices from there compared to from Paris etc...

GReed. greed, greed.. bad air quality. unsafe roads, scamming, double standards and pricing, alcohol limited buying hours, no vaping, and on and on goes the list and now an extra fee for what??? more double standards, scam and pocketfilling

On the positive side: friendly and welcoming immigration policies, a corruption-free environment, and no prostitution!

Simple Thai logic: fewer customers, raise the price

They still have to keep paying for all those legal and illegal immigrants somehow.

You're not comparing like for like.  Passenger Service Charge (PSC) is a charge to build/maintain/operate the airports and their infrastructure.

Thailand PSC is 730 baht in this example.  PSC in the UK varies by airport but for example, LHR is 2,285 baht equivalent, EDI is 1,195, MAN 1,465, LGW 900 and BHX 900, so arguably comparable or more likely even lower than the Thai equivalent given costs in each country.

The example you showed earlier was of the UK APD which is a completely different beast and is purely levied to boost the Government coffers.  An abhorrent (IMO) charge but not the one that should enter this debate.

The government may have kicked this potential increase off presumably because they are too closely involved with AoT who run the airports, but should not stand to gain from it as it stands.

I get your point - but the underlying complaint is the 'charges / taxes' being increased in Thailand - it should enter the debate because its part of the 'cost' of using an airport / flying through an airport and thus comparisons of 'additional costs' is a valid one.

The reality is - the Airport Passenger Charges / Taxes in Thailand are a lot less than those charged in the UK... and other airports overseas... But as another poster mentioned, also less than Singapore (though Singapore has just one airport for all its passenger traffic (ignoring the private airport to the north)).

....But.. we have members getting 'anti-Thai' and lying accusations wards 'Thai Greed' targeting foreigners - Which IMO is flawed thinking...

Complain about Tax on Cars in Thailand - thats fair enough.

Complain about Tax on Wine and imported foods etc - thats fair enough.

But to complain about a slight increase in airport Tax when its already extremely low, IMO highlights a certain lack of balance.

Especially for Americans who fly everywhere in the USA. They itemize the fees and taxes on every ticket. Try that 10x per year.

They are also forgetting the fact that Singapore is an exceedingly rich country that makes more from any traveller on taxes than they could ever need, therefore they can subsidise the PSC to promote their (single) airport.

I still maintain it makes no difference to any single tourist anywhere as who looks up what the PSC is at a destination airport when they book their holiday? Most people don't even know there is such a thing at all, they just buy their flight tickets for where they want to go.

So this thread is full of the typical AN whinging about nothing.

Great way to increase tourism...

Do you check what the destination airport passenger service charge is (that is included in your ticket price) before you go on holiday? Wow. And would an increase of 100 baht on the price of your ticket (when Thai PSC is one of the lowest already) make you change your destination? Double wow.

How do you afford holidays?
