Chiang Rai is facing a red-level flood alert as emergency measures take effect in response to severe flooding in northern Thailand. Authorities have directed immediate evacuations in four high-risk areas of the Mueang Chiang Rai district, as rising waters threaten safety and infrastructure.

Early this morning, a video on the Rak Chiang Tung Facebook page highlighted the Sai River breaching its banks in both Mae Sai and across the border in Tachileik. The footage showed overwhelming floodwaters, stressing the urgency of robust barriers and emergency protocols.

The Chiang Rai Office of Public Relations Department reinforced these warnings, focusing on at-risk communities in Mae Sai. This includes the Sai Lom Joy community, Koh Sai Village 7, Mai Lung Khon, and Muang Daeng, where residents have been urged to transfer belongings to higher ground and relocate to safer zones.

As of 7am, Jotada village reported intense rainfalls of 118.8 millimetres, escalating water levels at the Mae Sai Friendship Bridge to 398.31 metres above sea level. This precarious rise drives concerns of potential widespread flooding, with more heavy rain forecast to impact the area further by mid-morning.

In response, the Mae Sai Municipality has declared a red-level emergency. Key messages urge residents in vulnerable areas such as Sai Lom Joy market and Koh Sai to secure their possessions and pack crucial documents and emergency supplies. Assistance for the elderly and bedridden is vital, prioritising their safe relocation to designated shelters like the Wat Phromviharn evacuation centre.

Transport logistics have been adjusted for efficient evacuations. Identified pick-up points include the irrigation road with a yellow municipal truck, Koh Sai's five-way intersection with a purple tram, and key junctions in Mai Lung Khon and Muang Daeng, where municipal trams are stationed for transport.

Officials emphasise the importance of staying informed via updates from the Mae Sai Municipality and other official sources. For immediate assistance or emergencies, the public can contact the hotline at 199.

With water levels continuing to pose a grave risk, authorities reiterate the necessity of compliance with evacuation and safety measures as they work to navigate the challenges arising from this natural disaster. Local agencies remain on high alert, ensuring resources are rapidly deployed to support affected residents.
