Dinosaur Discovery Fuels Khon Kaen’s UNESCO Ambitions

Archaeologists in Thailand's Phu Wiang National Park have made an exciting discovery, unearthing a sixth dinosaur fossil that could pave the way for UNESCO Global Geopark status by 2026.

Thailand’s esteemed palaeontologist, Varavudh Suteethorn, revealed that the latest fossil find, from excavation site three, is potentially linked to the Phuwiangosaurus Sirindhornae. This dinosaur species proudly adorns the official emblem of Khon Kaen. The excavation began in February 2024, leading to the recovery of vertebrae, ribs, and teeth. However, limb bones still reside deeper in the rock, waiting to be uncovered.

Mr Varavudh explained that further comparative analysis will determine if this fossil represents a new species within the Brachiosaurus family. Such discoveries highlight the rich prehistoric tapestry of the region.

Situated in northeastern Thailand, Phu Wiang National Park spans over 200,000 rai of mainly arid forest. Since research began in 1976, it has produced six dinosaur fossils, drawing around 6,000 visitors each year, including scholars and students from around the globe.

Sutham Wongchan, the park’s chief, noted Khon Kaen's determination to achieve UNESCO recognition. The province presented its case at the International Palaeontology Congress in 2022, and necessary upgrades have been finalised, setting the stage for a 2026 registration. The bid is part of a broader 2025 Smart City initiative aimed at increasing both academic acclaim and tourism.

Thailand boasts two UNESCO Global Geoparks thus far, located in Nakhon Ratchasima and Satun. Adding Phu Wiang to this prestigious list would not only amplify the region's scientific significance but also its cultural and economic appeal.

To bolster its application, Khon Kaen has been hosting media tours at the excavation site, showcasing the area's unique palaeontological treasures. This strategic move aims to engage both academic and tourist interest, bolstering the local economy and reinforcing its reputation as a hub of scientific discovery.

The conversion of fossil excitement into potential UNESCO status exemplifies a blend of cultural heritage preservation and modern development strategy.
