A seismic ruling at Teesside Crown Court has seen Ciara Watkin, 21, convicted of sexual assault after failing to disclose her transgender status to a male partner. Prosecutors declared Watkin's omission meant the man could not give informed consent to their sexual encounter.

The pair initially connected on Snapchat in June 2022, with Watkin performing sex acts on the man, aged 21, without revealing her transgender identity. She reportedly told him she was on her period to prevent physical contact below the waist.

After a subsequent meeting, Watkin cut off contact, later confessing her gender status and male genitalia in a text exchange, triggering profound emotional distress for the man, reported CNN.

Senior Crown Prosecutor Sarah Nelson stated, “It's clear Watkin did not inform the victim of her transgender status before their sexual activity. This lack of disclosure significantly impacted his mental wellbeing.”

Watkin admitted to concealing the truth, but she argued that her biological sex should have been "blindingly obvious," according to her defence team. Despite her defence, she was found guilty on charges of sexual assault and assault by penetration.

Watkin's sentencing is set for October 10, marking a pivotal moment in legal interpretations of consent and gender identity disclosures.
