UAVs Attack Oil Refinery in Russia’s Perm

On the morning of August 21, Ukrainian long-range UAVs attacked an oil refinery in the Russian city of Perm.

Perm Refinery

The Lukoil-Permnefteorgsintez oil refinery is a key industrial facility in the Perm region.

The refinery’s design capacity is around 13 million tons of crude oil per year. It produces gasoline, diesel fuel, jet fuel, and lubricants, and also processes associated petroleum gas.

A drone attack warning was issued in the region in the morning. Perm Airport also suspended operations.

The Lukoil-Permnefteorgsintez has been repeatedly targeted by the Ukrainian Defence Forces’ drones. The strikes took place on July 29, May 8, and May 7. Another drone attack was carried out on April 30.

The claims point to an intensifying Ukrainian effort to strike energy, logistics and transport networks far beyond the frontline.

Drone strikes hammer Russia’s energy network

Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces said 27 energy facilities were hit between August 17 and 22 alone during its “Crimean Switch Off” operation.

The wider campaign, running from July 1, allegedly targeted high-voltage substations, gas turbine plants and gas distribution stations. Sites struck included major power substations in Russia’s Krasnodar Krai and Donetsk region, alongside energy infrastructure across Crimea.

Moscow’s shadow fleet faces a second front

At sea, Ukrainian forces are pursuing a parallel operation aimed at restricting Russian shipping through the Sea of Azov, Kerch Strait and north-eastern Black Sea.

Ukraine claims 242 vessels were disabled between July 6 and August 22, including 134 in the Sea of Azov and 108 in the Black Sea. Thirty-six vessels were reportedly struck in August alone.

The campaign is designed to increase pressure on Russia’s maritime logistics and the fleet used to move goods and evade sanctions.

Oil and logistics hubs now firmly in the crosshairs

The attacks are also reaching Russia’s fuel and distribution infrastructure. Ukrainian forces said they struck the Yeysk oil loading complex in Krasnodar Krai on August 22, hitting fuel storage tanks at a site used to supply Russian military units.

Ukrainian authorities have also confirmed strikes on major Ozon warehouse facilities, following earlier attacks on Wildberries distribution hubs allegedly being used for military purposes.

The expanding target list reflects a broader strategy: rather than relying solely on battlefield gains, Kyiv is increasingly trying to disrupt the energy, logistics and transport systems that keep Russia’s war machine moving.

NATO vs Russia. I'd back the Ruskies at the present. But in another 5 years? I wouldn't rule out a strike on some European arms factory at all. Tell them first; so no civi casualties. What is the UK thinking of by stealing that ship? Sooner or later, there will be tit for tat retaliation for sure.

Zelenskyy says Ukraine could match Russia's territorial gains by end of 2026

Ukraine's Defense Forces continue to retake territory despite Russia's attempts to advance on the battlefield.

Ukraine expects to reach territorial parity with Russia by the end of 2026 in terms of the amount of territory occupied and liberated since the beginning of the year according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

According to Zelenskyy, Russia has occupied around 990 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory since the beginning of the year. At the same time, Ukraine's Defense Forces have regained control of approximately 820 square kilometers.

"We believe that in 2026 we will reach an equal amount of Ukrainian territory temporarily occupied by the Russians and territory we have liberated, measured in square kilometers," Zelenskyy said.

The president said Ukrainian forces continue to conduct operations in different areas of the front. According to him, the results of another operation are expected by the end of August.

Zelenskyy also spoke about the situation in the Dnipropetrovsk region. He said the region had been almost completely liberated, with around 10 square kilometers remaining under Russian control.

"There are three small villages there. There is virtually no enemy left there," the president said.

According to Zelenskyy, reaching territorial parity is important not only on the battlefield. He stressed that the figure also matters from a political and diplomatic perspective.

In 2026, Ukraine's Armed Forces have been conducting active offensive operations in the Oleksandrivskyi sector. Since the beginning of the year, Ukrainian forces have liberated 26 settlements in the Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia regions.

But Russia is upping production and is developing their own Starlink alternative, so this superiority may be gone next year. Russia still has massive foreign reserves, enough to last several years, to prosecute the war. Also more men. And ballistic missiles.

Ukraine needs to knock out far more refineries to really hurt Russia. And target weapons factories while they still have the advantage. It is a war of attrition, and Russia has the advantage in the long term - more space, more men, more weapons. Ukraine may be better in using its manpower, but Russia also learns, slowly.

With the USA out of the running, because of Trump, Europe will have to up their support a lot more to tip the balance in favour of Ukraine. Russia has China and North Korea actively helping them.

Ukraine widens strikes on Russia’s economy as Ozon reels

Major fire damage to an Ozon warehouse in Enem, Adygeya, Russia

Ukraine has expanded its campaign against Russian economic infrastructure, hitting multiple warehouses belonging to Ozon as Moscow struggles to protect key logistics and energy facilities.

The latest attacks sent shares in Russia’s second-largest online retailer plunging, while Kyiv also claimed strikes on Russian military and oil infrastructure.

Ozon hit six times in just three days

Ozon said four logistics facilities in southern Russia were targeted, including sites in Makhachkala, Krasnodar, Adygeysk and Nevinnomyssk. Several people were injured, operations were halted at one hub and workers were evacuated from others.

The attacks brought the number of Ozon facilities hit within three days to six. Its shares fell by almost 30% on Monday, piling financial pressure on a company already facing concerns over the ability of its main shareholder, AFK Sistema, to provide substantial support.

The strikes follow Ukraine’s sustained attacks on rival Wildberries, which Kyiv says has supplied components to Russia’s military.

Putin prepares the state to take control

The escalating attacks have prompted Vladimir Putin to prepare sweeping powers allowing the Russian state to take control of strategically important companies whose facilities are judged inadequately protected.

The measures cover fuel, energy, transport, communications and logistics infrastructure. They could allow the state to seize assets and assume ownership if operators fail to protect sites or restore them quickly after attacks.

The Kremlin has also discussed state assistance for damaged warehouses, promising reconstruction at a “new technological level”.

Oil and military targets come under fire

Ukraine’s campaign is reaching deep into Russia’s military-industrial and energy networks. Kyiv said its forces struck a Russian weapons plant in Rostov, where solid rocket fuel is produced, causing a fire.

Ukrainian forces also reported hitting a Russian MiG-29 and two vessels in the Black Sea.

Meanwhile, Russia’s Perm oil refinery remains shut after a drone strike on 21 August damaged its CDU-4 processing unit, which accounts for almost 40% of the plant’s capacity.

The pressure is spreading

The strikes are increasingly forcing Moscow to confront a difficult choice: spend heavily defending critical infrastructure, accept further disruption, or intervene directly in companies hit by Ukrainian attacks.

For Kyiv, the strategy is clear — make Russia’s war machine increasingly expensive to operate while putting pressure on the economic systems that keep it moving.

Many here would disagree with your assessment of Kellogg as a warmonger and point out that he wasn't calling for Ukraine to invade Russia; it was Russia that invaded Ukraine.

Paradoxically, many of them would also be your strange bedfellows in considering Kellogg a warmonger, given that he explicitly called NATO countries cowards for not backing the Iran war.

To clarify, I've never personally predicated that EITHER side will ultimately "win" this war.

I do believe that the widespread belief in the inevitability of a Russian victory has proven to be a crock of caca.

It made sense in the first few days, but that's long over.

I don't even know if this war will ever really end.

The North vs. South Korea war has technically never ended.

If I had to predict more specifically, I can see a very messy "ending" maybe Korea style, maybe not, where neither side feels very satisfied.

Ukrainian forces strike Russia's Kasta radar, drone training center, repair base and depots

All of the affected sites were located in the occupied territories of Ukraine

On August 25 and during the night of August 26, the Ukrainian Defense Forces struck a Kasta radar station, a Russian drone control training center, a Russian repair base, and warehouses, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

In Kacha (temporarily occupied Crimea), the Kasta radar station was struck.

In Luhansk, a Russian drone training center was struck.

In addition, in Pervomaiske, located in occupied Crimea, a Russian repair and maintenance base was struck.

Russian depots were also struck:

・A fuel and lubricants depot in Prychepylyvka, Luhansk region
