Flamingo: Will Ukraine's new 'wonder weapon' replace the Taurus?

"As of today, we are using our domestically produced long-range weapons," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced at a press conference last weekend. "And to be honest, we haven't spoken to the US about such things recently," he added.

 

The weapon in question is the Ukrainian home-made FP-5 "Flamingo" cruise missiles, unveiled by the domestic defence company Fire Point in mid-August.

 

While one missile is to be produced per day since its introduction, according to media reports, the company could increase this number sevenfold by the end of the year to over 200 per month or 2,500 per year.

The Flamingo has a wingspan of around six metres, weighs around 6,000 kilograms and can carry a payload of slightly over a tonne, making it the first Ukrainian-produced "heavy missile system".
