CDC Director Ousted Amid Turmoil and Staff Resignations

Dr. Susan Monarez, appointed just weeks ago as the director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, has been abruptly ousted, according to insider sources. The sudden leadership shakeup has woken up the agency, followed quickly by the departure of several high-level officials.

Morale at the CDC had already reached a nadir after a harrowing shooting left buildings on their main Atlanta campus riddled with bullet holes. The hailstorm of bullets tragically claimed the life of Officer David Rose. This act of violence, coupled with sweeping staff cuts that saw 600 employees receive termination notices, adds to an already tense atmosphere.

The US Department of Health and Human Services released a statement on social media thanking Dr. Monarez for her service. However, in a surprising twist, Monarez’s lawyers insist that she has neither stepped down nor received official notice of dismissal. The upheaval reportedly stems from pressures relating to her refusal to dismiss three veteran CDC leaders, reported CNN.

Amidst this turmoil, the agency faces accusations of political meddling in scientific affairs. Tensions reportedly escalated after HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s team clashed with Monarez over vaccine policy announcements that she allegedly deemed scientifically unfounded. Kennedy has previously indicated plans to unveil controversial research on vaccines and autism, a topic that has long stirred public discourse.

Shortly after Monarez’s departure was reported, three top officials, including Debra Houry and Demetre Daskalakis, also resigned, voicing strong concerns over scientific integrity and decision-making processes within the CDC. They stressed the importance of evidence-based practices and warned of the risks inherent in politically motivated directives—a sentiment echoed in their campus-wide resignation emails.

The leadership vacuum at the CDC is compounded by fears of compromised public health strategies. Insiders claim an internal climate of fear and frustration, reflecting a broader apprehension about the direction the agency might now take. Robust leadership and adherence to scientific principles are seen as essential in steering through these turbulent times.

While the public awaits official clarifications, the developments at the CDC have ignited a broader discussion on the intersection of politics and public health. The impact on the agency's ability to effectively handle emerging health threats and maintain public trust remains a pivotal concern.

As the dust settles, the reshuffled leadership and staff departures mark a critical junction for one of the world’s most prominent health institutions. Stakeholders are keenly observing the implications of these changes for future public health policy and the CDC's role in safeguarding health security.

Lawyers for CDC Director Susan Monarez say 'she will not resign'
A statement from HHS announcing that she was no longer the director of agency led to a flood of resignations from top officials.

Updated Aug. 28, 2025, 7:38 AM GMT+7 -- Two lawyers representing Monarez, however, say that’s not true: she hasn’t resigned, and the HHS statement amounts to an effort to force her out.

“Dr. Monarez has neither resigned nor received notification from the White House that she has been fired, and as a person of integrity and devoted to science, she will not resign,” lawyers Mark Zaid and Abbe David Lowell said in a statement.

“When CDC Director Susan Monarez refused to rubber-stamp unscientific, reckless directives and fire dedicated health experts, she chose protecting the public over serving a political agenda. For that, she has been targeted,” the statement said.
