More Political Metaphors

Featured Replies

May I trouble you with another sentence from the news?

I am having trouble with the words:

ขุนทัพ

ตัวชน

เกราะกำบัง

The best I can make of these military metaphors when applied to politics is as follows:

“"The choice of Mr. Samak Suntharawet to be elevated to become the head of the party has received rather negative criticism. However, for the Thai Rak Thai group which finds itself in the position of lacking a leader, the choice of an individual with Samak’s personality to be the campaign leader [is a good one]. [The party now] has a heavy-handed, double-fisted battering ram who is [also] able to function as a political shield at a certain level."”

Any thoughts about the use of these words? Thanks.

David, I thought your translation was quite good. Here is my own version.

The elevation of Samak Suntorawet to the party leadership has met with heavy criticism. But for the leaderless Thai Rak Thai’s, accepting a person with Samak’s personality as their “warlord” will give them a real heavyweight with genuine clout who can provide political cover on some level.

Maybe some of the other Thai aficionados can chime in with their best efforts.
