More than 4,000 runners from across the globe descended on Cambodia’s Angkor Archaeological Park this Sunday for the 10th Angkor Empire Marathon, a celebration of sport, heritage, and international camaraderie.

Held in the historic city of Siem Reap, the event saw participants racing past ancient temples and lush forest trails, with the iconic Angkor Wat serving as the dramatic backdrop. Organised by the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia, the marathon aims to boost tourism during the rainy “green season” while promoting healthy living and cultural exchange.

Senior Minister Thong Khon, who also heads the Olympic Committee, confirmed that 4,224 runners took part—3,462 Cambodians and 762 foreigners from 47 countries. The largest contingents hailed from China, Japan, France, the UK, and the United States.

The race featured four categories: a full marathon (42 km), half marathon (21 km), 10 km race, and a 3 km fun run. Spectators lined the course, cheering runners as they wound through centuries-old ruins and rice fields, creating a festive atmosphere that blended athleticism with awe.

Cambodian athletes dominated the podium. Vann Pheara clinched the men’s full marathon title with a time of 2:47:29, while Kan Srey Roth led the women’s field, finishing in 3:22:09.

Now in its tenth year, the Angkor Empire Marathon has become a fixture on the regional running calendar, offering a rare chance to compete in one of the world’s most breathtaking heritage sites. With its mix of local pride and global participation, the event continues to build bridges—one stride at a time.

Cool

Yes indeed - plenty of shade, especially along the tree lined roads around Angkor Wat and the other Khmer temples and buildings.

Looks like a great event.
