Burkina Faso Slams LGBTQ Practices with Harsh New Law

Burkina Faso’s transitional parliament has enacted sweeping legislation against LGBTQ practices. This controversial move introduces strict penalties, including prison terms from two to five years and fines, targeting what is deemed as promoting lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender activities. Justice Minister Edasso Rodrigue Bayala confirmed the law on state television, highlighting its immediate implications.

Passed unanimously by the 71-member transitional parliament, the law now awaits the signature of military junta leader Ibrahim Traore. This development positions Burkina Faso alongside a number of African nations that criminalise LGBTQ conduct, such as Senegal, Uganda, and Malawi. In stark contrast, countries like South Africa, Botswana, and Angola have moved towards decriminalisation and protective measures.

The legislation is part of a broader effort by the military government, which seized power in a 2022 coup to not only modernise family law but also address issues of nationality and statelessness. However, the law’s impact on LGBTQ rights has drawn significant attention and criticism from human rights advocates around the globe. They argue it erodes legal protections and could fuel discrimination and abuse.

Within Burkina Faso, the law’s introduction reflects growing intolerance under a military regime grappling with escalating Islamist militant violence. This crackdown on dissent extends to other areas, with the junta increasingly curtailing freedoms as part of its governance strategy. Experts fear these actions risk further isolating Burkina Faso on the international stage, reported CNN.

While the government claims the measures modernise legal frameworks, the international community views them as a regression to human rights standards. As the nation awaits the military leader's approval, the situation underscores the ongoing clash between conservative and progressive forces in Africa's legal landscapes.

Funny how every time LGBT is mentioned it's the same old names on here like rats up a drainpipe, talking about anal sex and pedophilia. You do wonder about these people.

Where's Yagoda? Lol

Does any ever travel to Africa?

Ever?

HIV, Ebola, the black plague....isn't Africa the last place in the world where LGBT people would go?

Black plague. Lol  I think bubonic plague died out in the 14th century.

Well, you may think that.

Of course you'd be very wrong:

Cases still occur a few times a year in Asia, South America and the United States and more commonly in parts of Africa

Well, nothing ever dies out completely. As the article suggests, the pathogens remain. It also states that the virus is less deadly but more transmissible, like Covid.

In any case I don't think the black death is going to be very high on people's list of worries when they travel to Africa. Much more likely to get something else.

Somewhere over the Rainbow...

And you guys thought Trump sucks.

These guys have absolutely nothing going on.

They don't know what to do with all their spare time, so they're conjuring up LGBTQ laws to make themselves look busy.

They're more than likely guided by Christian Nationalists from the U. S.  like Ghana and Uganda.

Would put me off travelling to Africa. Uganda is a hotspot apparently.

You know what’s funny Baht? No we’re not the ones “talking about anal sex and peodophilia”. That’ll be you lot.

And We’re also not the ones that have a desperate urge to insult or degrade those that are different to us.

We are in fact here to educate you. To free you from hatred. To take you out of the 1950’s.

And if if you really need Yagoda just put your right arm firmly up in the air and shout “Yoo, Hoo!”

No problem. It's probably my ironic style.  🤩

I thoroughly agree with your assertions regarding certain names on here.

Black Death/Bubonic Plague is still around and occurs in parts of the world, particularly in rural areas of Africa, Asia, South America, and the western U.S.

The trouble is that as far right these countries are, the 'civilised nations' are too far the other way!

This guy's all set for Covid
