A well-known durian wholesaler was tragically shot dead at his business in Betong, Yala province, raising questions about the motive behind the shocking incident. The victim, 68-year-old Prasert Khananurak, fondly referred to as Ko San, was discovered fatally wounded at his durian buying station on the evening of September 3.

The chilling event unfolded around 8.45pm, as Police Lieutenant Chatchai Channam of the special task force 444 responded to reports of the shooting. Ko San, sitting on a plastic chair among his bustling operation, was struck once in the head. The projectile entered the side of his head, exiting through his left eye, ensuring instantaneous death.

At the crime scene, chaos mixed with disbelief as several pickup trucks continued unloading durians. Employees, farmers, and traders, who were present during the shooting, watched on as police secured the area and began their investigation.

Authorities have cordoned off the vicinity, including a nearby durian plantation. It is suspected this location may have served as the gunman’s vantage point. CCTV footage captured the scene, showing a single gunshot as Ko San sat at his table, before collapsing. His body has since been transported to Betong Hospital for a comprehensive autopsy.

In the aftermath, Betong Police and investigative teams have been combing through evidence and questioning witnesses to uncover any clues about the assailant and their potential motives.

Preliminary theories have surfaced, ranging from personal animosities and business rivalries to broader local security concerns. The police are committed to a thorough investigation, determined to bring the perpetrator to justice and shed light on the circumstances surrounding this unsettling murder.

The killing comes just two weeks after a significant visit by Commerce Minister Jatuporn Buruspat to Ko San’s depot. On August 16, Jatuporn, accompanied by senior officials including Nuntapong Jiralertpong, inspector-general of the Commerce Ministry, and Withayakorn Maneenet, director-general of the Department of Internal Trade, engaged with private sector representatives and local farmers. The discussion centred on durian management, trade policies, and governmental support for the thriving fruit sector.

This high-profile engagement underscores the prominence of Ko San’s establishment within the local fruit trade, casting further intrigue on the crime’s motives. As the investigation unfolds, the community watches closely, with many hoping for swift justice and answers to quell the growing unease.

Locally, the durian trade remains a significant economic driver, with tensions occasionally flaring over market dynamics and competition. The equivalent of Ko San's influence in the industry is akin to over THB 5 million worth in annual turnover, highlighting the critical nature of his enterprise to the region.

As police continue their investigation, the hope is that swift action will prevent further escalations and offer consolation to those affected by this grievous act.
